KUALA LUMPUR: Taiwanese pop diva A-Mei unleashed the raw power of her
aboriginal rock-chick alter-ego, Amit, with her Amit First World Tour Live
concert here yesterday night to thousands of screaming fans at the Putra
Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The three-hour concert, titled after her aboriginal name, Gulilai Amit, sees
the singer-songwriter clad in leather outfits, leopard-print skirts, complete
with heavy Goth make-up.
Explosive, infectious, energetic -- A-Mei a.k.a. Amit -- proved to the
roaring crowd once again why she has remained one of the most legendary Asian
singers of our time.
Right from the start of the show, she whipped the crowd into a rocking frenzy
with tracks from her latest release and crowd favourites such as Chung Don
(Impulse), Fen Sheng (Division) and Open Your Eyes.
To the delight of her fans, A-Mei brought along renowned American guitarist
Marty Friedman, the former lead guitarist of trash metal group, Megadeth.
Friedman is widely recognised as one of the world's greatest rock guitarists.
Throughout the show, the sound of his electric guitar rocked the rafters of
the stadium.
The indigenous singer-songwriter belonging to the Puyuma tribe, who was born
in Taitung, has been going by her Chinese name Chang Hui Mei, known
affectionately as A-Mei, since she first debuted in the Mando-pop
entertainment scene in 1996.
Known to many as the pride of Taiwan, A-Mei has taken 0home numerous
international music awards. Her album and concert sales have also constantly
ranked among the highest in Taiwanese history.
Last year, she decided to reinvent herself to expand her musical repertoire
in a self-titled album using her aboriginal name.
This latest world tour first began last November with nine performances in
China alone.
The Malaysian leg of her concert was organised by Star Planet and Unusual
Entertainment.
