Boras: Interest in A-Rod abounds

According to agent Scott Boras, teams are lining up for the chance to
negotiate for Alex Rodriguez's services.


The telephone started ringing at agent Scott Boras' office the moment
Alex Rodriguez filed for free agency Monday, and it hasn't stopped, he
said, with teams already lining up to talk.

Boras, who plans to arrive Sunday along with 10 staff members at the
Hyatt Grand Cypress in Orlando, said he already has 15 appointments
scheduled with general managers at their annual meetings.


Not all of the meetings are scheduled to solely discuss Rodriguez,
Boras said. He represents 11 other free agents, such as center fielder
Andruw Jones and pitchers Kyle Lohse and Eric Gagne. Few teams may be
willing to spend in excess of $30 million a year for a single player.


"There's great interest," Boras says, "because teams involved understand
what the revenues in the game are, and a player like Alex pays for itself.


"There are the teams that you'd assume would be interested, and there are
surprises. But I'm not going to acknowledge what teams are interested or
involved. If they want to acknowledge it, that's fine, but it won't come
from me."

The Los Angeles Angels became the first team to publicly declare their
interest in Rodriguez. New general manager Tony Reagins confirmed he has
informed Boras they will explore pursuing Rodriguez; San Francisco Giants
GM Brian Sabean also plans to talk with Boras, saying they'll "kick the
tires," but termed the team's chances of signing him as "a reach."

New York Mets GM Omar Minaya said he plans to talk to Boras next week but
declined to say whether a meeting was scheduled to discuss Rodriguez.

He said he left several phone messages Thursday for Mets baseman David
Wright, telling him that he remained an integral part of their future and
that he would be kept abreast if negotiations became serious with Rodriguez.

"When free agents like these come up," Minaya says, "we're a team that's
always going to be mentioned. I don't want to be specific about who we're
interested in, or who we're talking to. But I will probably sit down and
talk to (Boras)."

Boras hinted that Rodriguez, who opted out of the final three years, $81
million in his 10-year, $252 million contract, is hoping to receive a 10-
year deal in excess of $300 million.
