Rodriguez Hikes Socks and the Homers Follow

MINNEAPOLIS, April 10 — When Alex Rodriguez took batting practice Tuesday,
he had these five hits in a row: fly ball off the right-field wall, two flies
off the center-field wall, ground ball up the middle, fly ball into the
left-field seats.
It was only practice, but that was a slice of vintage Rodriguez. He was
focused on hitting the ball to center or right, but still turning on pitches
and punishing them to left.
“He’s locked in right now,” Manager Joe Torre said before the Yankees
played the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome. “The most important thing, for
me, is he’s using the opposite field and center field, because you’re less
likely to get fooled because you see the ball just a touch longer, and it
doesn’t look like he really cares what they’re throwing him.”
Not much is fooling Rodriguez these days. On Monday, he became the first
Yankee to hit five home runs in the team’s first six games. He has benefited
from hitting behind Bobby Abreu, who works deep counts, and is working well
with the new hitting coach, Kevin Long.
“It’s basically been getting himself in a good position to hit, trusting
his ability, trusting what he sees, allowing himself to stay short and tight
with everything, and making sure his leg kick is under control,” Long said.
Rodriguez has also made a fashion adjustment. While most players wear their
pant legs down by their ankles, Rodriguez hikes his up to right below his
knees, showing off his solid navy blue socks.
He has done this before, for a game or so at a time, but now it is part of
his ensemble.
“We were on a back field in the middle of spring training, just being goofy,
” Rodriguez said. “I was with my buddy Pepe, from Miami, and I just put
them up. He said, ‘You look like a Notre Dame football player,’ and I just
stuck with them after that.”
