Messina’s attempts to replicate their fine start to last term hit an early
snag at Lazio in Week 1. After picking up eleven points in their first five
matches last year, the Southern underdogs will not want to see themselves get
this campaign off to a bad start. They may find it difficult against a
Fiorentina side buoyed by the arrival of new Coach Cesare Prandelli and the
goal-scoring debuts of Luca Toni and Stefano Fiore.

Fiorentina’s triumph over one of last season’s surprise packages, Sampdoria,
on the opening day showed that the Viola are capable of living up to their
billing as potential Champions League qualifiers. The chance to make it to two
wins out of two against a side tipped to struggle will be a major incentive for
Prandelli’s troops.

Fiorentina are almost at full strength with only defender Christian Maggio and
Brazilian midfielder Guilherme Do Prado unavailable. Messina are also without
their Brazilian midfielder, Rafael. The opening day defeat to Lazio was a
setback to Bortolo Mutti’s side but their proud home record last season – the
only defeats coming against Lecce and Milan – will give them confidence and
hope that they can pick up their first points.

If a little extra spice is needed to liven up this encounter it will come in
the form of Fiorentina’s €7m striker Luca Toni. The Azzurri hit man joined
the Viola from Messina’s Sicilian rivals Palermo. Toni was on target in the
Rosanero’s 2-1 defeat of Messina late last term and is sure to receive a
hostile welcome at the Stadio San Filippo.
