Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino has denied that the club has
already sold striker Luca Toni.
The world champion, who underwent surgery on Saturday to solve a metatarsal
injury in his left foot, has been paired with a summer exit after two seasons
with the Viola.
Toni is a target for Bayern Munich, Inter and Juventus and the latest reports
suggested that the player had already reached an agreement with the
Bundesliga outfit,
「We have not sold Toni and we have not spoken with any club about him,」
Corvino told Rai Radio Anch'Io Lo Sport.
「We might have to face the next season without a great protagonist such as
Toni. Let's wait until the end of the championship and then we will sit down
and talk,」 added the official.
「In any case, we have not received any firm offers, we have only heard
rumours, but we wanted to wait until the end of the season in order to assess
which objectives we had been able to reach.」
However, Corvino isn't worried about Toni's possible departure, as he
believes Fiorentina's attacking department can still do very well without him.
「We have Reginaldo and Giampaolo Pazzini, as well as Adrian Mutu and Valeri
Bojinov, who will return from Juventus. Our attacking department offers
guarantees.
「We have played an excellent season and could have earned a Champions League
spot, had it not been for our initial penalisation.
「The Scudetto? It's too early to talk about that. In order to win the
championship you need a strong project and time as well.
「Roma, Milan and Inter have been working for years, whereas we were in Serie
C2 only five years ago,」 explained Corvino.
「We will try to strengthen the squad, although we would need a higher
budget. In any case, the Della Valle family will continue to invest in this
club.」
The sporting director has just agreed to a new five-year deal with the
Gigliati along with Coach Cesare Prandelli, who is now tied to Fiorentina
until 2011.
「A long-term project is based on two important starting points, which are
the Coach and the sporting director. We have obtained great results in the
past two years and this could be just the beginning,」 concluded Corvino.
