HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAAP!
Best wishes to Jaap Stam who has turned 32 on July 17 and for the first time
has celebrated his birthday at Milan. Well, just symbolically because the
Dutch defender has not joined his new team-mates at Milanello yet, progressing
to EURO 2004 semi-finals with Netherlands. He will arrive on July 30, for the
moment he is still enjoying his last days of holiday along with his wife and
four children, who he likes spending his time with when he is not playing with
his team. Stam was born in Kampen, made his debut with F.C. Zwolle in 1993 and
moved to PSV in January 1996 where he stayed until 1998, when he began his
experience with Manchester United. A great start with the Red Devils, as he
clinched a memorable hat-trick in his first season, winning the domestic title,
the English FA Cup and the Champions League. Then Lazio, and finally Milan.
'I join one of the strongest teams in the world. I started to admire them when
my compatriot Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard were playing
for them. I will reunite with Alessandro Nesta, a great star, and I can finally
play alongside Paolo Maldini, whom I have always held in great consideration.
With Milan I want to win everything.'
These were the first words as a Milan player from Jaap Stam, the much-chased
after Dutch giant who will finally seal-up the Rossonero back-line. At 1,92 cm
tall and 92 kilos, the central defender represents a real problem for all
attackers who come across him; imposing, difficult to get past and beat in
