Sandro Nesta's target is to end his career in a Rossonero jersey. He reveals
it in his quiet way, without placing too much emphasis on it, but he does it.
He said: 'I've still four or five years left at Milan before my contract
expires, and if the club want it, I could even stay longer and close my career
here.' Waiting to see if he is back in the league's game against Sampdoria on
Sunday or in the Champions League one against Sparta Praha next week, the
defender has talked about a wide range of themes during the 'Profile' programme.
MILAN - A chat over a wide number of topics, a real journey inside the player.
Alessandro Nesta guested a new issue of the 'Profile' programme which will be
run from this week onwards on the Milan Channel.
The opening stage is a sort of comparison between Sandro and Franco Baresi,
with clips and videos of both half-backs. This is to demonstrate that the
arrival of the Collevecchio-born star has been welcomed by the Rossonero crowds
as a soothing remedy for the legendary captain's farewell in 1997. Nesta said:
'I have to thank the Milan fans because although they couldn't wait to compare
me to Baresi, they have never asked me to be what I am not, they have accepted
and supported me as Nesta. Baresi has been very important for me, though. I
remember I talked with him in my first days at the club about one year ago,
when I was not doing very well, and that meeting proved to be very useful.'
After some images of his birth place and the statements from his brother
Fernando and others he had grown up with, Sandro focuses on his world. He said:
'I've not much time to go home, but I know that people love me in Collevecchio
and I thank them for their affection. My mum? When I speak with her, I never
focus on football but on all the rest. My brother? A great understanding, we
have grown up together, this is still very important for me now.'
A wide range of themes have been touched during the programme: the much-
rumoured summer preceding his move to Milan ('I was curious to know how it
would end. One day I was set to Inter, the other to Juve. At the end the only
club who made a real bid were Milan');
the Golden Ball ('To win it you have to play well and be famous as well');
the derby ('In Milan I manage to live it with more balance than in Rome because
here it is felt as a normal game and not as an obsession like between Roma and
Lazio');
Japan ('How unfortunate, I nearly lost a foot. I've not managed to play the
Intercontinental Cup. I hope to have another chance before retiring').
During the profile, the talk has also been of Silvio Berlusconi, Adriano
Galliani, Paolo Maldini and the other past legends he would have liked to play
with, before the final stage was dedicated to Carlo Ancelotti, Mauro Tassotti
and Milan in general.
