Give us Nesta if you want Stam, Lazio tell Milan
july 24, 2003
rome (afp) - lazio have told serie a rivals ac milan they will have to let
them have alessandro nesta back in exchange for sought-after dutch defender
jaap stam.
"if milan want stam they will have to give us nesta," lazio administrator
luca baraldi told the corriere dello sport. "even if they offer 30 million
euros (34.5 million dollars), the answer would be the same.
stam is not for sale."
italy international nesta, 27, joined milan from lazio last summer in a 30
million euro deal.
earlier this month lazio turned down a 20 million euro (23 million dollar)
bid from internazionale for stam, also believed to be a transfer target for
several english premiership clubs.
stam, 31, is currently in dispute with lazio's board of directors who he
feels have reneged on the terms of the four-year contract he signed in august
2001.
he and the other members of the first team squad have been told they must
accept pay cuts to help the cash-strapped club reduce its crippling wage bill.
manchester united manager alex ferguson sold stam two years ago for 23.5
million euros (27 million dollars) after the netherlands international
published a book containing allegations of dressing-room spats.
in the book stam also claimed ferguson had made an illegal approach for him
when he was at psv eindhoven.
stam had three successful years at united and was a key part of their
treble-winning team in 1999 when they won the premiership title, fa cup and
champions league.
the dutchman was outstanding for lazio last season despite being asked to play
on the right-hand side of the defence in most matches.
he played a pivotal role in helping the rome club clinch fourth place in serie
a which saw them qualify for the champions league.
