NESTA COVERS THE FIELD
Alessandro Nesta is proud of what the Milan defence has done so far
this season, as they have conceded the least number of goals in the
Champions League and have one of the best defences in Serie A. The
world-class defender said: 'To concede few goals is very important,
otherwise you don't win. It is also important to score some but the
goals must come at the right moment and I know we will find them
sooner or later. However, it is essential to go on like this, as
those who are almost unbeaten usually win the title. We will try to
beat Juventus in Serie A after defeating them in Europe. I really
would like to win the Scudetto, although I must admit that the
Manchester night was something special and I was highly impressed.'
The Rossonero half-back also commented on the period he is going
through in his career. He said: 'I'm more experienced now and don't
run so much as I used to do in the past. I spend the right amount of
energy and I think I'm more balanced in my play than I was at the age
of 20. I believe I'm more mature now.'
Then the hot topics. First of all the big clash against Boca Juniors.
Nesta said: 'I've never played an Intercontinental Cup final before
and since it may happen only once in a player's career, I can't waste
this chance.'
He also focused on Italy's qualification for next summer's European
Championships and admitted: 'We saw a two-faced team - a very bad one
and a very good one. I hope that the second one will finally emerge
in Portugal. The template we have recently adopted is very attack-
minded and spectacular. We can be optimistic, although the
competition will be extreme. There is not a lot of difference among
the top nations who have qualified for Euro 2004 and much will depend
on how the sides are physically and psychologically when the
competition starts. Will [Paolo] Maldini figure? I'll just say this:
I know that everyone wants him but Paolo is so intelligent and
experienced to face this situation consistently.'
And the Golden Ball, which the Milan captain has been touted as a
possible winner of, is the last subject dealt with at Nesta's press
conference. He said: 'It is right that Paolo wins it this year,
although [Pavel] Nedved also did very well. However, Maldini played
with continuity, lifted two great trophies to the sky and showed
things which are not normally seen. If he does not win it, it is
quite unjust. My chances? I'm very happy with myself but I am not
able to make back-heels or fine moves. And however, I'm really
convinced that this season Paolo deserves it.'
