'OLYMPIC' HEROES
Every game crowns its heroes. Even though they are always heroes.
Sandro Nesta and Jon Dahl Tomasson. Their goals took Milan to the
Italian Cup semi-finals, giving the Rossoneri a 2-1 victory over Roma at
the 'Olimpico' stadium. Fabio Capello's team seem to be living a
recurring nightmare, as it was the third defeat Carlo Ancelotti's men
inflicted on them in 2004. Not only statistics and figures, but above all,
also plenty of emotion. The first of these came four minutes into the
second period, as Nesta opened the scoring soon after coming on, with
a wonderful header at the back post. The Roma-born defender scored in
his home stadium. The 'Olimpico', where he started his playing career,
where he matured and where he made an impact, growing and becoming famous
in front of a great crowd. Some call it destiny. Well, for him Thursday's
game was a sort of derby. Nesta got on the Milan scoresheet for the third
time since joining the San Siro club (last year he netted against Perugia
deadlock in a game which seemed set to end in a draw. Nesta gave his side
the lead and then focused on defending, what he is actually born to do.
No problem up front, there was Jon Dahl, the Dane who has taken off at
top speed this season. In the 57th minute, when he broke the offside trap
before turning past goalkeeper Carlo Zotti and slotting home, fans were
wondering whether it was all true. Or if it was a dream. His fine turn
gave different sensations. A second-string striker? A reserve? No,
absolutely not. The stars always respond on the pitch. So, Jon Dahl,
is a real star.
