Milan suffer Ambrosini blow Tuesday 31 October, 2006
Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini is set to be sidelined
for three weeks after picking up an injury in the derby with
Inter on Saturday.
The 29-year-old, who has faced several minor physical problems
in the first part of the season, was replaced by Ricardo Oliveira
in the second half of the game and medical tests confirmed on Monday
that the player suffered a muscle strain to his leg.
In the meantime, the Rossoneri are finalising their preparation in
view of Wednesday’s Champions League Group H tie with Anderlecht
at the San Siro.
Carlo Ancelotti split the team in two groups for Monday’s training
session and each of these was then divided up into smaller two or
three-player groups, with the players mainly working on ball possession.
The goalkeepers worked away from the squad, as well as Giuseppe
Favalli and Marek Jankulovski, who trained in the sandpit.
Yoann Gourcuff is instead at the Coach’s disposal, having recovered
from the injury which has kept him out since September 20.
“I am ready to play. I have made major improvements in the last
few days and I could have maybe played against Inter,” said the
youngster to the club’s website.
“I think I am in the condition to play against Anderlecht. I’m
disappointed about how the derby turned out, but altogether Milan
played well and proved their character even in the most difficult
moments of the game.
“Considering how we dominated Inter at the end, we would have
deserved a draw.
“We are very motivated for the Champions League. The game on
Wednesday evening is a key match for our qualification.
“We must give everything we have, it will be important to score
and to do it as soon as possible,” concluded the former Rennes man.
A 10-man Milan managed to take three points from Brussels in the
first leg two weeks ago thanks to Kaka’s goal and the Rossoneri
hope to repeat the exploit.
Anderlecht have never returned home celebrating a victory in 13
visits to Italy, the records showing they have gained five draws
and suffered eight defeats.
There is only one previous Italian meeting between the two sides–
a goalless draw at the San Siro in the 1993-94 Champions League
when Milan went on to win the competition.
