Milan hero remembers his roots
Friday, 27 June 2003
By Igor Linnyk
When Andriy Shevchenko scored the winning penalty in last month's
UEFA Champions League final shoot-out, it was more than just a
pivotal moment in AC Milan history.
Proud player
That became clear when Ukraine captain Shevchenko draped himself in
his yellow-and-blue national flag and declared: "This victory is not
only mine; it is a victory for all of Ukraine." Living with the exp-
ectation of his countrymen has always been a reality for the prolific
striker.
Modesty intact
None the less, writing as someone who first met Andriy when he was 17
years old, I can confirm his modesty has remained intact in the eight
years since despite his stellar achievements, especially since joining
Milan from FC Dynamo Kyiv in 1999.
Dynamo Kyiv
Prolific performances
His mentor at Dynamo, naturally, was coach Valeriy Lobanovskiy, who pa-
ssed away last year. Having made his name in helping Dynamo to the 1998
/99 Champions League semi-finals, Shevchenko's switch to Milan saw him
finish Serie A top scorer in his first season.
Dramatic triumph
However, for Shevchenko, the real triumph was at Old Trafford this May.
Having beaten Juventus FC goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in the opening
minutes only for the goal to be disallowed, he repeated the feat with
the decisive spot-kick to become the first Ukrainian to triumph in the
competition.
'Enormous happiness'
He tells uefa.com of that moment: "Honestly, I do not even remember what
I was doing in the first minutes after beating Buffon. There was enormous
happiness. By winning the Champions League I fulfilled myself as a player
. This is the outcome of all the work I have done since I was nine. This
is the sort of happiness you cannot express with words."
'I support my country'
Of his lap of honour with the Ukrainian flag, he said: "I knew how many
people watched the final and supported me - I support my country in ret-
urn." Three days after the final, Shevchenko took the European Champion
Clubs' Cup to Kiev and placed the trophy at the feet of the statue of
Lobanovskiy erected at the stadium now named in his honour.
Lobanovskiy's inspiration
"I always realised that football is a team game, you cannot win anything
on your own out there," said Shevchenko. "But Lobanovskiy taught us pro-
fessionalism with regard to every little thing in the game. He made us
understand what we are to do not only in the game, but also in and after
training."
Lobanovskiy
Determined to improve
As Lobanovskiy would have wished, Shevchenko is still determined to imp-
rove further. "The victory in Manchester is history," he said. "Now we
have to perfect ourselves - Milan always have the greatest tasks placed
before them." There is something else Shevchenko has gained from the ch-
icest of cities, as he now owns a boutique in Kiev in tandem with desig-
ner Giorgio Armani.
Giorgio
Spanish test
Shevchenko immediately faces one huge challenge - to lead Ukraine to UEFA
EURO 2004. Lying third in Group 6, they need to beat both Northern Ireland
and Spain in September to make sure of at least a play-off place. The venue
for the Spanish encounter, the Camp Nou, could inspire Shevchenko, who ann-
ounced himself to the world there on 5 November 1997 with a hat-trick agai-
nst FC Barcelona in a 4-0 Dynamo win.
'Tough fixture'
"We have to rely on our teamwork," said Shevchenko. "Spain have no problem
with personnel - they have an excellent league and great players. We have
an extremely tough fixture in front of us. It will not be easy with North-
ern Ireland as well, but Ukraine should think only about victories."
Forza Sheva~!!!
