Andriy Shevchenko has revealed how he chose Milan over Barcelona and
Manchester United when he left Dynamo Kiev in 1999.
The Ukraine international was 22 at the time and one of the hottest prospects
in European football after a bright campaign with Dynamo in the Champions
League.
He joined Milan for a then club record £23m fee and became the Rossoneri's
second all-time top goalscorer and the fourth all-time top goalscorer in
European competition.
“I had opportunities to go to Barcelona and Manchester United when I was 22,
but I chose Milan and the club were successful, winning everything possible,
including the Champions League and I won the Ballon d'Or,” Shevchenko told
Focus magazine.
Shevchenko joined Chelsea in 2006 for £30.8m and ever since then his career
has been in a downward spiral. He returned to Milan on loan last season
before agreeing to re-join Dynamo Kiev in the summer.
“I am proud of my career. All my best years have been played. I knew it was
time to return [to Dynamo]. Now I'm happy and just want to play football,”
Shevchenko said.
“Nothing lasts forever. I am 33 and I don't know how long I'll be fit enough
to play. But for the final few years of my career I want to be on the pitch
where I started my career. So I thought, 'this is not the sunset', and
decided to continue.
“I could have chosen from five to six European clubs, but didn't even
consider these options seriously,” Shevchenko concluded.
