"When I was a child, I liked to play cowboys! I don't hate Indians, but I
always took side of cowboys. In my city, all children played this game, and
they dressed up as a cowboy. And I was a baby cowboy too!"

"When I went to school, I liked studying. But, when I decided to play football,
I made a big mistake. It was difficult to conciliate football and study, but
I could have devoted to my studies in a better way. All my teachers told me
that I was doing a mistake, but I had only football in my mind. Now that I
think of it... probably I could finish another year at school and play football
at the same time. If I could come back, I would never leave the school.
Probably it was the big mistake of my life."

"Football is a natural passion for me. I was a ball-boy for Benfica and a great
supporter of that team. Every time I met a player, I asked him for an
autograph! And I was disappointed, if he denied it! So, if someone asks me for
an autograph, I remember that time: and I always give it, expecially if it is
a child that aks for it!"

MANUEL OR RUI?
曼努埃爾或是魯伊？
"In Portugal there is no one who calls me Manuel, they use Rui o Rui Costa. At
the beginning, in Italy, it was so strange. Listen to this anectode: the first
hymn to me from Florentine's supporters was MANUEL - RUI COSTA and I didn't
understand what they said...! So one of the boys asked me "Why don't you wave
to us when we sing for you?". And I asked him "When? What do you sing?". I
didn't understand that Manuel was me! Also in the street people called me
Manuel, and a lot of times I gave no regards to them... Now there are a lot of
peple in Italy that call me Manuel and it's OK for me. But in Portugal they
continue to call me Rui..."
〝在葡萄牙沒有人叫我曼努埃爾，大家叫我魯伊或者魯伊‧科斯塔。剛來義大利的時候，
就很奇怪啦。有件趣事：佛羅倫斯球迷對我的第一次歡呼是"曼努埃爾‧魯易‧科斯塔"，
而我卻沒領會到他們說什麼呢......！於是一個男孩就問我〝怎麼我們為你歡呼時你都不
向我們揮揮手呢？〞而我還問他：什麼時候？呼喊什麼呢？我沒意識到曼努埃爾原來就是
我呵！在街上也是，人們叫我曼努埃爾，很多時候我都沒反應......現在，義大利很多人
叫我曼努埃爾，我也習慣了。但是在葡萄牙人們依然叫我魯伊......"
RELATIONS WITH MY FANS
與球迷的關係
"I never had particularly obsessive fans. Usually my fans write me a lot of
times, and it's a pleasure for me to receive their letters. Especially when
you're in a bad period, a congratulation is highly appreciated: I think it's
so for every football player. Fans help you to work hard and go on and make
you stronger, because you want to show them that you are what they say!"
〝我的球迷都不是特別狂熱的。通常他們寫很多信給我，而對於我來說，收到他們的信是

ME AND PORTUGAL

〝There's just one thing I really miss from Portugal... It could be banal, but
I was born on the sea-side and in Italy (in Florence and here, in Milan), I
miss the sea very much. When I am at home, in Portugual, I can see the sea
from every place... In Italy I have to do a lot of kilometers to look at it!
And, talking about Portugal, listen to this: a lot of times in my country
people mistake me for Figo or Paulo Sousa... I don't know why, we're so
different... It also happens that they mistake Paulo Sousa for me! It's so
strange!"

"When I was in Portugal I liked to go to the theatre. Now, in Italy, I like to
read books and to listen to the music. I also watch tv so much: thanks to
satellite tv, I can follow Portuguese news and be informed about my country."

SEA HEAVEN

"If I should define Heaven, I imagine it with the sea. I ever stayed near the
sea since I was a child and I have sea "inside" myself! If I think about a good
thing, I associate it to the sea. When I was in Lisbon, I used to spend a few
hours on the beach. Even if I was alone, I liked to go to the sea-side, looking
at waves: it helped me to think about me and my life and... it was so relaxing!"

"Sometimes people say that football players live in a "golden world". I just
can say that I feel well because I do what I like to do, since I was a child.
I play football and I have a wonderful family: these are two important things.
But family, for me, is more important than football. I like my life. And there
is another thing that makes me happy: the love that people feel for me."

MY FAULTS

"I confess: I'm touchy. And sometimes I have problems with other people for my
touchiness. I believe in things I do: I think everyone should be a little
touchy on his matters....but sometimes I go too far in this! In a few occasions
I paid for this fault: I reacted instinctively, but I should have acted in a
different way. I also have another fault: I'm football addicted! Out of
football, I have time just for my family. The rest of my life is... football
and football again!"
"坦白說，是固執易怒吧。有時我會因為自己的易怒而難和其他人相處。我相信自己所做
的是對的---每個人都多少有點這樣吧......但有時我會太過頭了呢！有時我為這個缺點

LOOKING AT THE FUTURE
關於未來
"Football players have a short career: not so many years, but very full. When
I'll stop with football, I'd like to do a lot of things with my family. I'll
definitely travel a lot. As a football player, I travel a lot all over Europe,
but 'cause of my job, I have never had the possibility to go sightseeing. Only
from airport to a hotel and from hotel to the stadium! For example, I have been
a lot of time in Paris or London, but I want to go there again to live a real
experience in these two wonderful cities."
"足球運動員的職業生涯是短暫的---加加減減不過幾年，但是非常充實。當我不再踢球時
，我想要好好的與家人一起。毫無疑問，我還要好好旅行一番。雖然以球員身份我去過歐
洲很多地方，但因為工作，卻從不可能四處觀光，只是從機場到飯店，從飯店再到球場而
已！比如說：雖然到過巴黎和倫敦很多次，我依然想再去這兩個迷人的城市真正地感受一

INVALUABLE ADVICE
寶貴的忠告
"I know what people say when listening to me. Especially kids have a great
consideration about a football player words. So I'm very cautious in my
behaviour and in my interviews. When I was a child, I was a football fan and
I looked at great football players and now, I know I have a great
responsibility. Life for a football player is not so simple as it appears. So
I want to advise kids: don't make my same mistake about the school. Don't leave
the school to dedicate exclusively to football. You can do both things together
for a lot of years: it's important to reach the top in the studies as weel as
in the football field. For example: if you're a good football player and you
suffer an irreparable injury and you are forced to abandon football, what will
you do in your life? So school is important. And to become a football player
you have to do a lot of sacrifices: I always say that you are a "real" football
player just if you overcome the first difficulty (an injury, a bad period, a
quarrel with your trainer). And not everyone is so strong to overcome all this."
"我知道人們聽到我的話時會說什麼。尤其是孩子們很看重球員的言行。所以我很注意自己
的言行舉止。當我也還是小孩子時，作為球迷對會去模仿足球明星們的一切。因此我知道
自己是有責任的。足球運動員的生活並不象它看起來那樣簡單，所以我想建議孩子們別在
學業方面與我犯同樣的錯誤。不要為了要專門踢球而拋棄學業，你可以兼顧兩者很多年的
---在學業領域做到最好很重要，這和在足球場上一樣。比如說，你是一個優秀的球員卻不
慎受了致命傷被迫放棄足球，那你做什麼呢？所以學業是重要的。而且為了成為一個足球
運動員，你也必須作出許多犧牲---我總認為只有戰勝了首要的困難（傷病、狀態低迷、
與教練的爭執等）人們才能成為一個"真正"的球員。並不是每個人都夠堅強能從這些中走
出來的。"
