Milan plan part-time Beckham Saturday 21 February, 2009
David Beckham could remain at Milan on a part-time basis after Adriano
Galliani warned, “I won't increase the $3m offer.”
Los Angeles Galaxy protested this week that the Rossoneri were not taking
it seriously and needed to make a firm bid in order to make it a permanent
signing.
The two clubs are struggling to reach an agreement, but it is reported
Beckham has found a compromise - he will stay in Serie A until May 31 and
then return to America for Galaxy's game with Toronto on June 6.
His current loan deal only lasts until March 9, although the MLS season
kicks off on March 22 against DC United and ends on October 20.
By taking this new route of remaining until May 31, Beckham would see out
the Serie A season with Milan and 'only' miss 11 MLS games.
This is a crucial step, as Beckham's contract includes a clause allowing
him to walk away without compensation at the end of the MLS campaign.
“Milan have made an effort that we consider right for an eight-month
loan deal because, as [AEG chief Tim] Leiweke confirmed, David will become
a free agent on November 30,” pointed out Vice-President Galliani.
“I don't want to cause any controversy and in fact thank Galaxy for
allowing us Beckham on loan during these months.”
When asked if he would increase the reported $3m offer to Galaxy's $12m
demands, Galliani was firm.
“Absolutely not. I have the experience to know the value of a player.
According to the European parameters, it is senseless to pay any more.”
Leiweke complained that the offer would not even cover the loss in shirt
sales, but the Milan chief pointed out there were different considerations.
“In the States they look at the commercial aspect, while in Europe our
transfers are above all based on technique. The budget at my disposal is
already at breaking point between wages and fees.”
The Gazzetta dello Sport suggests Beckham has already agreed a contract
until June 2010 and the $3m to Galaxy represent all that is left over, so
in order to facilitate the transfer, the England international would need
to take a pay cut.
The Rossoneri have every reason to feel confident, as they know that
whatever happens, Beckham will be a free agent and can join them in January
2010.
