Albertini the Legend
It was like a good omen that Angelo Colombo, coincidentally
wearing number 4, was substituted by the 18-year old Demet-
rio Albertini when Milan was playing against Como in 1989.
That was the debut of our legend! When the substitution was
made, I asked myself "who the hellis this guy?" I was worried
with the introduction of a new face, someone who I've never
heard of before. Of course, Milan were on a comfortable 3-0
lead (courtesy of van Basten, Gullit and Virdis..I think)when
the young Albertini came in. But at that time, I was not that
comfortable with this new fellow.
Gradually, Albertini's name disappeared from my memory which
coincided with my decline in regularly watching the Italian
calcio on TV. Besides,Milan had Rijkaard, Donadoni, Eranio,
Ancellotti, Gullit and Evani toorganize the midfield and th-
erefore, Albertini's name was insignificant to me. Adding to
his oblivion in my memory was our European Cup victory agai-
nst Benfica in 1990, a Milan team filled with champions. That
same year, I didn't even know Albertini was loaned to Padova
and worst, I didn't even know the existence of a team called
Padova!
But Albertini returned to Milan in 1991 and I was uncomfort-
able with his addition -- as an "unknown" -- to a team filled
with achievers. Although he scored his first Serie A goal for
Milan against Foggia (can't remember...), his return to Milan
was like a bad sign for me: Milan was banned from Europe for
a year for walking out the pitch following the floodlights
failure against Marseille, and thus, missed Europe in 1992.
In 1993, that fateful day against Marseille in the European
Cup final, in which Albertini played, Basile Boli made the
killing header that prevented Milan from winning its fifth
European Cup! I was devastated...
...but after reflecting on the games, there was a glimmer of
hope when I saw the way Albertini commanded Milan's midfield.
I told myself "Ancell-otti, Evani and Donadoni can't stay f-
orever" so Albertini seemed to be the right long-term repla-
cement! From then onwards, Albertini gradually stamped his
authority in Milan's central midfield.
Nineteen ninety six and ninety seven was the period of downf-
all for Milan, and especially our Albertini. Fans were restless
as Milan achored itself in the mid-table. I remember the dis-
cussions in one of the pioneer AC Milan forums where a Milan
fan named 'Benny' (good statistician, objective poster.....I
think some of you may remember him) was singularly condemning
Albertini. At that time, many of us had similar opinions con-
cerning Albertini, of how he should not be in the starting e-
leven which he had established himself since late 1991. We
bought Edgar Davids and the ultimately useless Pablo Garcia
to solve the problem then but they did not deliver. I felt so
sorry for Albertini because I was beginning to like him.
Then, there was a transformation whereby 1999 spelt Milan's
resurgence to football domination. The Serie A was ours and
Albertini was once again in the thick of it all! Thanks to
Zaccheroni (though I know many of you don't agree), Albertini
won his place in the centre of Milan's midfield. The follow-
ing seasons (including his Atletico stint) speak for itself.
Frank Rijkaard is my favourite Milan player of all time and
admittedly, I am one of those Milan fans that jumped on the
Dutch Trio & Italian Legends bandwagon. However, it was De-
metrio Albertini that I grew up with while being a Milan fan.
Why? He came into Milan as fresh as a newborn and not a cha-
mpion like most of his Milan team-mates at that time. Although
I was in awe of our champions such as van Basten, Baresi, Evani,
Gullit, Massaro, et.al. when I began rooting for Milan, they
were already established in their fields. They are the ones I
could look upon as role models. BUT Demetrio Albertini, on the
other hand, was then new and subjected to my initial disliking,
and then admiration, and then uncertainty, and lastly, absolute
respect!
In light of his current predicament, we must never forget that
Demetrio Albertini is indeed our legend. Over the years, he
has been with Milan through thick and thin, been criticized (
or even betrayed) by his own fans, and yet he emerged from this
abyss by proving himself to be a dedicated and committed Milan
player.
As a Milan fan and from the bottom of my heart, I am greatly
indebted to Demetrio Albertini for giving me the pleasure of
watching him play and learning something from him during his
time at AC Milan. For me, he is a Milan player through and
through, and nothing will change that!
And for that, I Thank You!

Also, I have been wearing number 4 on all my football jerseys
since 1997 symbolizing my admiration for a player whom I used
to ask myself "who the hell is this guy?" He is the Legend~
DEMETRIO ALBERTINI!
