PAOLO MALDINI
At the end of August 1997 an Italian Magazine proposed an intriguing but
almost impossible goal: to select the 100 best football players ever. This
operation caused unavoidable polemics because of some unjustifiable promotions
and omissions. However nobody criticized the pick of Maldini among the best
defenders of this first century of football. His nomination was introduced by
saying: " Maldini, born of a football family, is probably the best left defens-
ive back around, wonderful in attacking and defending, he is the synthesis of
modern defenders who can play offense keeping the team short and leaving the
opponents in offside. He was lucky enough to play with Franco Baresi but talen-
ted enough to emerge by himself , eventually replacing him as a captain, both
with Milan and with the National Team."
Do you want to add anything to this statement?
"I can say that even being just a game this award made me very proud. Then
I want to say thanks to all of those teammates, coaches and managers who help-
ed me to get so far. In my career I only played for two teams,Milan and Italy,
and if I hadn’t so many skilful people around me I wouldn’t be here now."
What did it mean for you playing with a great champion like Baresi?
"He was a model for me. On and off the field. Both as a player and as a man.
I always admired his commitment and uprightness. He had a winning and endless
career that you can’t achieve if not being as professional and serious as he
proved to be."
This is the first season after Baresi quitted and you are expected to replace
him as a player and as a leader, both with Italy and Milan.
"Franco left the National Team after the unlucky World Cup in the U.S. and
since then I have replaced him as a captain over the last three years. However
this is the first season I have to do the same with Milan.Berlusconi and Cape-
llo said I should emerge as the new leader of Milan and that makes me proud and
motivated even if I realize that it is going to be a tough job."
As it seems, right now, Maldini is a crucial name in our football. You are
the Captain and your father is the Coach of the National Team. Did you expect
a so unique situation to be possible at the beginning of your career?
"Honestly I have never thought that it was possible. Even when my father
coached the "Under 21" and I was a player of that almost unbeatable team. Now,
however, I don’t see our situation as a weird one becuse both me and my
father didn’t arrive so far by a fluke. If we are here it's because of our
hard work and commitment, and for this reason we can feel proud. My father, for
exemple, was a great player and later he won as many as 3 "Under 21" European
Championships as a Coach, which is not so easy. The same can be said about me.
At the beginning of my career many claimed that I played just because of my
name. That was a spur to give my best and prove that if I’m here it’s just
because of my talent and consistency."
The 20th of Jenuary 1985, being just 16, you made your debut in Serie A.
What kind of memories do you still have about that day?
"When Liedholm told me I would probably play in Udine I felt excited and
scared at the same time. It was a very gloomy Sunday and they even had to turn
the stadium’s lights on to finish the game. I made my debut after 11 minutes
of the second half, replacing Battistini who got injured. I still remember
Liedholm hugging me at the end of the game and all my fears turning into
happiness. In 1988 then, in Spalato, I made my first appearance with the
National Team replacing Francini versus Jugoslavia. Also that game finished 1-1
but it was kind of less exciting for me."
3 Coaches have been crucial in your career: Sacchi,Capello and your father.
"I can’t forget Liedholm who proved to be very brave by giving me the
opportunity to make my debut when I was just 16. I also want to remember
Tabarez, a good coach who probably deserved a better luck. All these coaches
taught me something helping me to mature. Liedholm was able to make football
less dramatic. Sacchi, instead, lived just for football. He always expected
concentration and commitment, both with Milan and with the National Team. He
gave us a winning attitude. Capello was the first coach I had with the juvenile
team of Milan. He was a sort of master for me. He taught me how to play
technically and tactically and I never doubted he would become a great coach.
His Italian and Spanish successes proved he is the best one. About Cesare
Maldini I’d rather talk of him as a father and as a grandfather. He is just
wonderful. I can’t judge him as a coach. He always followed me giving his
advice but I'm sure he never talked with any other coach about me. I can only
say that he won a great challenge by becoming the new Coach of the National
Team and he did it just by his own hands."
You won 5 Italian Championships, 3 Italian Supercups,3 European Supercups,
3 Champions Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 1 European Title Under 21. You
just misses a World Cup but 1998 will give you another chance to win it.
"This is going to be my 3rd World Championship. In 1990 we finished 3rd and
in 1994 we got 2nd , this time could be the good one. France is a European
Country and the time zone is the same, we’ll find perfect conditions to be
competitive. You know, in June I’ll be 30 and this could be my last chance."
Manchester United tried to lure you by any means but you didn’t show any
interest. Aren’t you attracted by the English League?
"Manchester and especially Chelsea made me great offers but right now I'm
not interested in anything else other than the Italian Championship. My
contract with Milan will expire in 2001 and I’m going to honour it until the
end. I’d like to spend all my career with Milan, like Baresi did. Otherwise
there will be many other options for me. England but also U.S. like Donadoni or
Japan like Massaro. Everything can happen, in 2001 I’m going to be just 33."
Since your debut Football has quickly changed. How do you feel about
having as many as 14 foreign teammates playing with Milan?
" Bosman caused a real revolution. Many players enjoy it but others would
slap him. It’s a weird situation we are not accustomed yet. Milan was one of
the first teams to sign 7 foreign players, but only 3 could play at the same t
ime. Now you could even line up 11 foreign players. I think there will be bad
consequences for the National Team and I don’t know how the fans will be able
to identify themselves with such a multinational."
A question for Maldini "the disc-jockey". Do you like more the English
football or the English music?
"My experience as a disc-jockey is over. It was just a distraction that my
friend Ringo and Radio 105 allowed me to try. I must admit that "Codice Rap"
gave me a lot of fun, even if Albertino, "the Prince of disc-jockeys" claims
that I didn’t show enough guts on the radio. Paolo Maldini lacking guts……
Can you believe it? However I quitted after my son Christian was born because
my wife Adriana rightly wanted me to spend my free time with them. Going back
to the English music I think they have a great Rock tradition. I really admire
the Beatles and envy the generation who had the opportunity to see them live.
I also like Elton John but during my shows I mainly broadcasted new bands like
"Oasis", "Verve", "Blur" and obviously "Spice Girls". They look as successful
and united as the National Football Team does"
How many times did you dream another final between Italy and Brazil?
"It would be wonderful. Last June in France we played the best game of the
year proving to be as good as they are. We can’t hide. Italy, Brazil,
Argentina, France and Germany, once again, will be the favourite ones. However
we can’t forget Netherlands, Spain and even Nigeria that is still improving.
I bet that the World Cup will be won by a team which can count on at least one
Milan’s player. Italy or maybe Ziege’s Germany or Kluivert’s Netherlands or
Ba’s France or Leonardo’s Brazil."
How do you rate Ronaldo among so many champions you have met in your
career?
"In the past I mainly admired 3 players: Maradona , Platini and the unlucky
Van Basten. Now I still love Weah and Batistuta. Ronaldo is just 21 and is
already "the Fenomeno". If he keeps on playing so well he is going to be as
great as those I mentioned."
Zoff played 112 games with the National Team. More than any other player.
Do you want to reach him?
"It’s very hard. He was a goalkeeper and won the World Cup being 40. I'll
retire much earlier but I'd like to get as far as possible, maybe until 100
games."
Baresi quitted without being able to achieve the "Golden Football". Do you
hope to be luckier?
"As long as defenders will be maltreated by the judges of "France Football"
I don’t think I’ll have any chance. Too many of them just keep on awarding
forwards. However I’m proud of the 2nd place FIFA assigned me behind Weah. It
is an important award because is given by Coaches from all around the World."
The last question regards your son Christian. Do you think he is going to
keep the Maldini’s tradition alive?
"Who knows? He is just 1 and we don't know how football is going to be in
20 years. Right now I wouldn’t dislike if after my father and me even
Christian achieved success as a football player. He was born while I was to
play against Czech Republic for the European Cup, maybe it's a sign of his
destiny."
