The special good-bye for champion Demetrio Albertini and the 20th
anniversary celebration of president Silvio Berlusconi’s purchase
of the club played out last night on the field of the San Siro. It
was truly a Night of Stars as the stadium filled with famous names
and faces that wished to say a final good-bye to football great
Albertini in the best way possible, with a game between Milan and Barcelona.
The sides played two 40-minute games, the first a remake of the
1994 finals with Capello and Cruyuff on the bench and the second
with Ancelotti and Rijkaard coaching today’s teams. The result
ended 4-2 in the Rossoneri’s favor, but the final sum of emotions
among the 35,000 present went beyond any possible measurable amount.
A parade of great champions, those that have written football history:
eight Golden Ball winners, from Stoichkov to Weah, from Shevchenko
to Ronaldinho. The field was alit with stars like Van Basten, Papin,
Baresi, Maldini, in addition to Kaka, Gilardino, Eto'o and Deco. It
was Demetrio’s night and he opened the evening with the first Rossonero
goal and followed it with a victory lap around the field. He said:
‘I have had a fantastic career, rich with success. I want to thank
my team-mates, Milan, Barcelona and my family. I want to thank the
person that allowed me to obtain all this success, our president
Berlusconi. I want to thank the fans.’ And, naturally, the fans
reciprocated, saying good-bye from the heart to the midfielder and
thanking him for all the good memories.
