Alessandro Nesta has confirmed that he will miss the World Cup quarter-final
against Ukraine with injury.
The Milan stopper underwent a number of tests on his leg muscle problems this
morning which ruled that he wouldn’t be fit in time for Friday’s clash.
“I went for more examinations at a Duisburg clinic earlier today,” he
stated. “I still have a few problems to resolve, but things have greatly
improved.
“Although I won’t be ready for the Ukraine match, I could be available for
the next one should we get there.
“If we do qualify for the semi-final then I will give it my all to be ready
in time. The doctor gave me reasons to be hopeful.”
Nesta, now likely to be replaced by Andrea Barzagli, is a massive loss to
Italy given his knowledge of Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko – his former
Milan teammate.
“You need to be at 100 per cent to limit his impact,” noted the Lazio youth
team product. “Make as few errors as possible.
“Shevchenko has few weaknesses and you can’t leave him alone for all of the
90 minutes. Ukraine have some good players, but Sheva is a great.”
Italy have been accused as being defensive in the tournament so far, but
Nesta defended his team and Italian people in general from floods of
criticism.
“We played offensively in our first match against Ghana, then we had to deal
with certain situations like dismissals,” he argued.
“As for Italians, we have taken our experience all around the globe. From
fashion to our restaurants, we are a nation of hard workers.
“People criticise us for the way we are, but they then want to dress like us
and eat like us. There is a little jealousy…”
Nesta’s final thoughts went to Gianluca Pessotto, his former international
teammate, who is seriously ill in hospital after a fall in Turin.
“We have all been affected as a lot of us have played alongside him for club
and country,” he noted. “It’s sad. Let’s hope that he can resolve the
problems he has had.”
