Number one seed Maria Sharapova moved swiftly into
the semi-final of the Rome Tennis Masters on Friday
with a one-hour win, 62 62, over fellow Russian Elena Bovina.
Bovina came onto court ready to go for all her shots,
hitting both big serves and big returns. But too few
went in. The result was a one-sided match of short rallies.
The number nine seed rallied briefly at the beginning
of both sets but could not hold any momentum. She looked slow.
Sharapova, wearing pink - without a doubt the colour
in vogue this year in Rome - said after her victory:
"I feel as if I am improving every match but I expect
the next round to be tougher."
She will play either another Russian, surprise quarter
-finalist Evengenia Linetskaya, or Switzerland's Patty
Schnyder. The two play under floodlights this evening.
