With her semifinal effort at the US Open, Maria Sharapova returned to the
world's No.1 ranking on Monday after a two-week absense. Sharapova first
grabbed the sport's top position on August 22nd before American Lindsay
Davenport regained the No.1 spot entering the US Open.
But in the final months of the season, Sharapova is sure to have plenty of
competition gunning for the No.1 ranking. Davenport currently sits less
than 400 points behind Sharapova, while US Open champion Kim Clijsters
and Amelie Mauresmo are both within striking distance.
Other ranking moves coming out of the US Open included runner-up Mary
Pierce making the leap back into the Top 10 from No.12 to No.6, Svetlana
Kuznetsova falling from No.5 to No.12 after her surprising first round
dismissal and Venus Williams jumping from No.10 up to No.7.
Following Sharapova in the Top are Davenport at a close No.2, along with
Clijsters, Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne at No.5. Rounding out the
Top 10 are Pierce, Venus, Elena Dementieva, who falls from No.6 to No.8,
Serena Williams and Nadia Petrova.
