By 6pm Court 3 was perhaps the busiest it had been all day. The
majority of spectators happened to be male as the main attraction
was the 23-year-old Russian, Elena Dementieva.
Practically dressed in simple white shorts, a vest top and sun visor,
the 5ft 11in Russian proved to be on top form against her opponent,
Iveta Benesova. Her straight-forward game plan - blistering ground
strokes from the back of the court - worked to wrong-foot her Czech
opponent. In under an hour, she was shaking hands at the net with a
6-2, 6-3 victory under her belt.
Today's successful strategy is one that has seen her through many
matches in the past year. Dementieva was the only player to reach
two major singles finals in 2004 - at Roland Garros and the US Open.
But while the talent is there - she reached the fourth round of The
Championships in 2002 and 2003 - she will have to work harder at other
areas of her game if she is to progress further in this year's tournament.
Needless to say, many eyes will be following her whatever her performance.
