Before the tournament began, many considered the spots in the top portion of
the draw to already be locked by No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne and No.7 Maria
Sharapova. Instead, its two other young Russians who will be in battle for
a spot in their first US Open semifinal. Petrova shocked everyone with her
straight sets victory against Henin-Hardenne, while Kuznetsova has
encountered very few problems to reach the quarters. This will be the first
meeting between these two players.
(6) Elena Dementieva (RUS) vs. (2) Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) - Mauresmo Leads 5-2
For the second time in the last three Grand Slams, Dementieva and Mauresmo
will square off for a place in the semifinals. Dementieva pulled out a
shocker back in Paris when she derailed Mauresmo's plans for the French
title with a straight sets victory against the Frenchwoman. This will be
their third meeting on hard courts with each player winning on one of the
previous occasions. Dementieva, the runner-up at Roland Garros, is looking
for her second trip to the semifinals in New York (first was 2000), while
Mauresmo will seek her second stint in the final four in the last three years.
