Safin Survives Scare; Srichaphan Does Not

Marat Safin recovered from a 1-4 deficit - and a broken shoe - in the third s
et to defeat tough Austrian Stefan Koubek to advance to the second round of
the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells Monday. Safin called the trainer in the
fifth game of the final set when he suffered a cut to his left foot. Despite
losing that game to go down 1-4, Safin rallied to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. "I had a
big hole in my show," Safin said. "I broke the shoe. When I was sliding I ...
had a cut on my skin and I couldn't slide anymore. Easier to call the trainer
than a shoemaker."
Despite his dual on-court problems, Safin said that he was always confident he
could come back and defeat Koubek. "In the third set, when I was 3-0 down, I
knew that I have a chance because he cannot play this type of game for a long
time... Because he was playing such a great match - he was focused - I just
said he was going sometimes for too much - down the line, passing shots,
serves. He hit an unbelievable wide second serve ace. But you have to really
understand tennis to see that. I knew that he will not be able to make it
when the score will be 4-3 or 5-3. The problems come when you have to finish
the match.
Safin has a modest 6-4 career record at Indian Wells. He has endured an
injury-plagued year so far in 2003, withdrawing from his third-round matches
at Sydney (shoulder) and the Australian Open (he tore ligaments in his left
wrist in his first-round win). He spent a month on the sidelines and has
played just two tournaments since, losing in the second round of Rotterdam
and Dubai.

Capriati, Mauresmo Reach Quarters
Second seed Jennifer Capriati passed a personal milestone Monday when she
advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Life Open for the first time by
defeating Russian Elena Dementieva 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Capriati, who is making
just her third appearance in Indian Wells, next plays another Russian,
Vera Zvonaerva, who upset American Meghann Shaughnessy in three sets.
"I think every match I'm getting better, and today was a good test," Capriati
said. "It was a more difficult match. I feel like since the first match I've
played well. I really felt like my strokes have been there and I've been moving
well. I think my chances are good if I just keep doing what I'm doing and stay
positive." Capriati is seeking her first title of the 2003 season and the 14th
of her career.
Two-time tournament champion Lindsay Davenport recovered from 2-4 in the first
set to secure a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over Elena Bovina. "I think it was
vital that I broke back again right away the next game and didn't give her a
chance to build on her lead at all. It was a little disappointing. I felt like
I kind of gave the game away with a couple quick errors and didn't really make
her earn it or fight for the first break. I was able to turn it around right
away and get back even. I just kept going with that momentum that I started
to build."
