TOKYO AGREEMENT OF 2002 Sep. 7, 2002 Tokyo, Japan Preliminary Since the first formal proposal from The ASEAN Law Students' Association in the 14th Annual ASEAN Law Students' Conference (ALSC) held in Singapore from the 24th to the 28th of June, 2002, we the respective law students' associations of Asia have been evaluatin the possibility of merging into one association. Through the discussions held by The Asian Law Students' Association (hereafter ALSA) of Korea, ALSA Japan, the Representative of Law Students' Association of Peking University, and The ASEAN Law Students' Association at the Korean Conference 2002 the representative from the respective associations agreed to have further discussions for a formal agreement on the subject mentioned here above, according to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the said parties. Withe these inentions we have assembled here in Tokyo, Japan for the 2nd Annual Asian Law Students' Forum and through the Governing Meetings the respective parties hereunder have reached and agreement as follows. The Asian Law Students' Association The respective parties hereunder agree to merge the associations, which have been separately involved in THe Asian Law Students' Association and The ASEAN Law Students' Association, into a new international law students' Association. THe Legal Aid Association of Peking University and Law Association, Students' Union of the University of Hong Kong clarify their positions of appreciaing and supporting the idea of The Asian Law Students' Association. But they still define themselves as potential members for ALSA. After the establishments of ALSA China and ALSA Hong Kong, the former two associations shall be bound to this Agreement. Vision The respective law students here agree to set our vision and hope for the association as follows: -To focus a global vision on the promising future of Asia -To promote and awareness of justice -To facilitate the recognition of the social responsibilities on law students Objective & Means The respective law students here agree to set our objectives and the means to satisfy the objective as follows: --To understand and appreciate the diversity and share the ideals of law in society through interchange and communication among Asian law students --To motivate law students to develop a creative spirit through a network of join-activities among Asian law students --To encourage the enhancement of the capabilities of Asian Law Students to become internationaly minded. socially responsible, academically committed, and legally skilled Structure The respective parties hereunder agree on the recognition of creating and administrative structure for the said united association as follows: --The International Board of ALSA to administrate for the general interest of the law students in Asia --The National Board of ALSA to represent and prioritize the general interest and the opinion of the law students in their capacity and cooperate with the International Board of ALSA --The Local Board of ALSA to, if necessary, support the role of the National Board of ALSA Further Discussions The respective parties hereunder agree to be present or at least send as authorized agent to discuss the fundamentals for the establishmetn of the association at the 15th ALSC. Amendment of This Agreement Amendment of this Agreement Any amendments of this agreement shall be by the approval of all signatories hereunder and shall represent their further cooperation.
