Montella targets World Cup 2006 Thursday 28 July, 2005

Roma’s Vincenzo Montella says his personal objective for
the new season is to book his place in the 2006 World Cup
Finals.
Montella returned to the international scene last term as
a result of his 21 League goals and he’s again eager to
prove his worth to Italy boss Marcello Lippi.
"My target for the campaign is to make sure that I reach
the World Cup Finals in Germany," stated the 31-year-old.
"Who will be my rivals in the scoring charts? I see the
same names as usual such as Andriy Shevchenko and the rest.
I don’t see any surprises."
Montella returned to his very best last term and he’s been
rewarded for his efforts by replacing Antonio Cassano as the
new vice-captain.
"I happily accepted the armband but seeing as I didn’t want
to talk about it last season, when I didn’t have it, I don’t
want to now either," he noted.
The Giallorossi endured a disastrous campaign last term but
Montella is looking forward to the future.
"A lot of things have changed but we are working well with
new boss Luciano Spalletti," he continued.
"The first three teams in the League (Juventus, Milan and Inter)
have a little bit more than everybody else but I believe all
three are just as good as each other."
Montella was also asked to comment on the Cassano situation
seeing as he still hasn’t signed a new contract.
"Everybody is responsible for his own actions," he stated.
"We can’t possibly just keep talking about him."
