Alcohol Banned In Rome For Champions League Final
The Italian authorities have promised extra security for the Champions League
final amidst fears of trouble...
Security will be beefed up at the Champions League final between Manchester
United and Barcelona in Rome next week in an attempt to clamp down on
potential trouble-makers.
The Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemmano, has revealed that he has asked
authorities for extra manpower on the day of European football's showdown
event. It comes just hours after the British Foreign Office issued a warning
to United fans, telling them of the potential dangers they face when they
travel to the Eternal City. The Italians are on high alert, but they are
hoping the final goes off without any trouble.
"I have asked the ministry of internal affairs for more police powers in
order to reassure security for the Champions League final," Alemanno told La
Repubblica.
The Mayor also reminded supporters that the sale of alcohol will be
prohibited in the build-up to the final, and there will be checks on bars and
shops to ensure rules are being adhered to.
British paper The Times has been painting a violent picture of the final,
claiming Rome is 'Stab City'. Many will remember their unsuccessful campaign
to get the final moved to a different venue.
It is hoped that the banning of alcohol will lessen the chances of drunk fans
causing trouble.
