Daniele De Rossi will wear the prestigious number 10 for Italy at Euro 2008
after the Azzurri's squad numbers were announced.
There was much speculation in Italy, as there is in every major international
tournament, as to who would be granted the honour of wearing the number 10 on
their back.
The four main contenders were believed to be Daniele De Rossi, Antonio
Cassano, Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Del Piero. However it is De Rossi who
won the nod, having worn the number during most of the Euro 2008 qualifying
campaign.
Del Piero takes the number 7 that he has had in recent tournaments, while
Cassano and Pirlo receive 18 and 21 respectively.
Many players in the squad will have the same number that they had during the
victorious 2006 World Cup. These include Fabio Cannavaro, Fabio Grosso,
Andrea Barzagli, Marco Materazzi, Gianluca Zambrotta, Mauro Camoranesi,
Gennaro Gattuso, Simone Perrotta and Luca Toni.
