‧UPS's new operations in Philippines may undercut Taiwan's role
Taipei, March 19, 2002 (CENS)--Major U.S. courier service company
UPS (United Parcel Service) will inaugurate its new regional transit
service center in the Philippines in April. But UPS stressed it will not
cut back the number of flights to Taiwan.
UPS got the rights to fly to the massive market in mainland China
last year. But the lack of direct transport link between Taiwan and
the mainland prompts it to launch a new regional air cargo
transit service center at the Clark military base in the Philippines.
Executives of UPS emphasized that the new move does not mean the
company will walk out on Taiwan since it will still maintain the
current 76 air cargo flights to the island every week in the near future.
Yet the move is expected to significantly eclipse the importance
of its current regional transit service center in Taiwan. UPS b
ypassed the Philippines and other major Asian nations to choose
Taiwan to set up its regional business operations headquarters i
n Asia mainly due to Taiwan's geographical location.
However, analysts said that UPS is forced to return to the Philippines
after prolonged impasse over the establishment of direct transport
links across the Taiwan Strait. They said the move can be interpreted
as a vote of no confidence in Taiwan and may even spark negative
chain reactions from other foreign investors.
They said that the UPS action shows that the government has been
too slow in taking bold actions to fulfill its many ambitious plans to
turn Taiwan into a global logistics center, a regional transshipment
center, a business operations center in the Asia-Pacific region, etc.
They added that the UPS case may serve as a grave warning that the
government has "talked too much but done too little."
