above 和 over 均可作"在...之上"解, 有時可交換使用,
但應注意下列情況:
(1) 一物並非處於另一物正上方時, 只用above
e.g. We've got a little house above the lake.
(我們的小屋居高臨下俯瞰湖泊)
(2) 一物遮蓋另一物時, 用over
e.g. There was cloud over the town.
(城市上空雲層密佈)
(3) 表示 "在...上方穿越" 時, 用over
e.g. The plane was flying over the channel.
(飛機正飛越海峽)
作 "超過", "多於" 等解時, 多用over,
但下述一類情況卻常用above
(1) above zero (零度以上)
(2) above sea-level (海平面以上)
(3) above average (超過平均水準)
below表 "正下方" 之意時可與under互換
e.g. The water reached a few inches below/under the knees.
(水深差幾英寸就到膝蓋了)
表 "非正下方" 之意時, 用below, 不用under
e.g. From the top of the mountain we could see a lake below us.
(我們站在山頂上可以看到山下的湖泊)
e.g. The miners are working below.
(礦工們在地下幹活)
