It is not 1970s now.
Basically, everybody in UK knows Taiwan.
Although some Britons were confused of Taiwan and Tailand,
they didn't confuse of Taiwan and poor third countries.
That is actually the major difficulty for someone to get scholarship.
Britons are not like stupid. Remember all the Taiwanese required VISA to
stay in UK, that is very different from the EU residence and those of
Common Wealthy. When you apply your VISA, you have to show your funding source
or sponsor; that is still the case when you extend your VISA in UK.
The school could offer you a place, but you won't be allowed to stay if you
fail to show your funding, no matter who is your sponsor.
Moreover, only very few scholarships are obligated to Taiwanese, Japanese,
South Korean, Singaporean... and usually competed in the same pool with
those candidators from third countries. Let's forget the truth that we are
Taiwanese and review the issue fairly. Those people could be really poor,
but they could work few times harder than Taiwanese and appreciate the
scholarship even much more than Taiwanese, who has been used to live in
a relative rich society. If you are British government, what would be your
decision?
Well, I would not say that is a bad idea, however, was very surprised that was
a suggestion from a Dr whatever but an accountant.
Anyway, Let's get back the topic you are interested.
I hold a very different view from this.
If you just want a PhD, you can even get one in Taiwan.
Very cheap, VISA, even passport, not required and still can working part-time.
Now Taiwan higher education is not too bad, especially at some aspects.
People studying in Taiwan is even beneficial to more information and chances
to get a good career immediately after degree, while people who finish their
PhD overseas still have to worry their career in Taiwan.
So, what point to get a foreign degree?
I would say, living in European for few years gives you a pretty good chance
to know more what you even cannot touch in Taiwan. That could be culture,
language or even a slang term learnt in a local pub.
It enlarge your world view, it pulls you off the signle-mind thinking style,
It gives you a brilliant EU experience, it will be part of your memory that
you could remember in your whole life. But,
you won't be able to touch even the edge if you just stay in Taiwan forever.
Academically, to do research with your British colleague gives you perfect
chance to learn how European do their research. In meeting and chatting,
you always learn something --- that is part of methodology. If people don't
suppose to get a PhD under supervision, you should have already got one,
shouldn't you?
If you pay the bloody high tuition fee, but actually study in Taiwan,
I can see the happiest person will be your supervisors, because they
won't receive any question, complaint, responsibility... and still get payment.
Moreover, if you face any problem on your study, they are not responsible,
because it is your choice to go the way, even they would suggest you not.
In addition, that would become a weak point in the future,
Because people owning a British degree suppose to be able to use English
very well, know Britain very well and even European... those made reasons
to offer you the job. Yet, could you
image when you are in an career interview, the examiner could ask you:
Why you obtained a British degree but were not in UK at that period?
Once their suspect is ignited, you actually lose!
Especially when there is another people who gots the same question and then
tries to hold the chance to show her of his brilliant British experiences,
and intends to stress those relating to the requirement of the job, which
can not be found in the other candidators.
Studying abroad is somewhat of investments.
Wish it helps. Good luck.
