Match Summary:
A sensational match which began slowly enough but rose to a breath-taking
climax. Argentina settled first and drew first blood, but there was no
stopping the Australians – and especially striker Salapasidis. The Aussies
began breaking down the Argentinian defence and Salapasidis caught the South
Americans with two quick strikes in as many minutes. The shocked South
Americans trailed 1-2 at half-time, only for Salapasidis to complete his
hat-trick after the interval. Placente put Argentina back into the game and
Riquelme's penalty two minutes from time seemed to have saved the Champions'
honour -- only for another penalty, converted in the last minute by the hero
of the night, Salapasidis, to win it for Australia and put them on top of
group E.
Jose Nestor Pekerman (Argentina coach): We knew this was going to be a tough
match and it turned out to be the best match of the tournament. Lots of
action, lots of emotion.
Les Scheinflug (Australia coach): Australia and Argentina are good friends.
Argentina are an excellent team and this was a super match. I give full
credit to my players for coming back from being a goal down. After we had
scored the third goal, Argentina brought in Aimar (ARG) who is a super player
and he made a lot of difference to the game.
Kostas Salapasidis (four goal hero): I was confident when taking the penalty.
I knew I could score. I was quite cool.
