Match Summary:
The most entertaining part of the first half was seeing the creative play of
Irish keeper O'Connor. The Irish team as expected played a defensive and well
organized match. Unlike the Irish, Argentina seemed a bit nervous and
couldn't play their role as the favourite. Following the goal by #9 Romero
for Argentina, Ireland was forced to open their game and in doing so proved
why they deserved to be in the semi-finals. In the end, it was the skills of
Argentina keeper Franco, in the final 30 minutes of play, that propelled
Argentina into the Final.
Brian Kerr (Ireland Rep. coach): I was quite disappointed with the boys'
possession of the ball in the first half, but they played better in the
second half. It could be fatigue after six games in 15 days. In the last
20 minutes, we had Argentina hanging on for dear life. We tried to take the
game with skill but it was then a bit too late. My boys felt so proud of
making it this far.
Jose Nestor Pekerman (Argentina coach): We did expect a very difficult game.
Any team that makes it into the semis has to be taken seriously, and Ireland
proved that, and made it very difficult for us. Ireland gave everything they
had in the last minutes but we managed to hold on.
