Fifa Postpone World Youth Championships
03/06/2003. Fifa have postponed the World Youth Championships in the
United Arab Emirates because of the possibility of war in Iraq, just
900 miles away.
The Fifa executive committee approved president Sepp Blatter's proposal
to postpone the tournament to a later date, yet to be decided.
Blatter said: "Fifa regrets having to make this decision because the
team of local organisers, who have worked tremendously hard, were more
than ready to host this tournament.
"But Fifa must take into account its responsibility towards the players,
officials and other parties, as well as towards the media and spectators."
The decision follows concerns expressed by many of the competing countries
about travelling to and playing in the United Arab Emirates at a time of
such heightened political and military tension.
The three-week championships were scheduled to kick off on March 25 and
finish on April 16.
Last month Blatter rejected the possibility of staging the tournament
somewhere else, or of cancelling it altogether.
