Story
The first impression is deceiving. 67 kilos at a height of 1,75 metres
let the young Czech appear weedy, who has joined Borussia Dortmund after
playing for Sparta Prague. Additionally, he has a boyish face and uses
reserved gestures. “Hey boy, eat a schnitzel”, the BILD newspaper
headlined when reporting about Tomas Rosicky for the first time.
That was at the beginning of January, 2001, a few days after the most
expensive transfer in Bundesliga history so far had been announced. “It
is a Bundesliga record, but compared with Italy, Spain or England the
amount of 25 million Deutschmarks is peanuts”, says BVB president, Dr
Gerd Niebaum. The amount of money came out as a brilliant investment.
Undoubtedly, Tomas Rosicky is one of the most important players having
led the team to the German championship title during the previous season.
“Playing with him in the same team is like a licence to score”, top
scorer Marcio Amoroso cheered, who again and again profited from the
exact and intelligent passes from the young director.
The now 21-year-old Czech moved from Prague to Dortmund together with
his mother, Eva in January 2001. His father, Jiri, (member of Sparta’s
1967 champions team) is very often in Dortmund. Having his family in
Dortmund was to help him integrating into the new environment. “My
parents help me to settle in Dortmund.” He says about himself: “I am
rather calm and cool. When I am not playing football, I like to be left
alone. I usually read books or sit in front of the computer.”
The mid-fielder’s technical qualities and control are seen as “unique”.
Tomas Rosicky is one of the league’s super stars, no doubt about it. The
news magazine Stern reported about him on many pages in October of last
year. It says: “The jersey is too wide, the pair of trousers too long,
the shinguards cover the rest of his lower body. He has the league’s most
valuable legs, but they can hardly be seen. He appears like a small boy
who is jokingly allowed to play with the adults, but he plays like a
veteran. Precise and cool. He neither bangs the ball around nor does
he swagger it, he moves it like a chess player his chessmen. Every move
is elegant, almost brilliant. His way of playing is not spectacular, it
is aesthetical, nice to look at. Football seem to have been invented for
players like him.”
According to the kicker sports magazine the dribbles of the ?filigree
worker able to play with both feet“ are a feast for the eyes. His way of
playing is described as determined and without flourish. Those who write
about him in Czechia call him “Football Mozart”. Rosicky played in the
inside left or central mid-field for Sparta Prague. Czechia’s former
national coach, Josef Chovanec, enthuses about his “sensational control”
and explains: “Tomas has everything an international top class key
player needs.” In Feburary of 2000 he appointed the dynamic mid-fielder,
who is not only strong in the offence but also in the defence, for the
first national team for the first time. Also the successor of Covanec,
Karel Bruckner, knows that with Tomas Rosicky he has a world class key
player in his team, who has been playing for several Czech national teams
since the Under-15’s. Meanwhile, the Dortmunder from Prague has absolved
20 first-team international matches.
2001/2002 season
The filigree technician was one of the strongest goal prepares. No other
player prepared more goal shots than the Czech whose eleven preparations
were only topped by Ze Roberto, Hasler and Miriuta. Throughout the
Bundesliga he prepared most big chances by delivering 23 passes. During
the last seven match days he scored three of five goals in the season.
Especially, the timed passes were often dangerous for the opponents. He
knew how to change quickly. Rosicky prepared the league’s most counter
attack goal shots and most counter attack goal scores.
Remarkable: Team-mates received two of three long passes. Every sixth
corners kicked by him led to goals. So, he shot the most dangerous corners
in the league. No other team-mate tried to score from the distance as
often as him. He had a lot of self-assertion in the defence and in the
offence. Rosicky could hardly be stopped when playing the ball. He won
54 percent of the challenges and was the strongest mid-fielder in dribbles
due to his starting quickness.
