Geovanni

Nationality : Brazil
Notes : Was part of the Brazilian team that won the World U/17 Championship in
1997 along with Ronaldinho. Has also been involved in Sydney 2000 Olympics
where Brazil lost surprisingly in the quarter-finals and the 1999 World Youth
Cup. Helped Cruzeiro win the Copa Brazil with key goals including the winner
in the final. Made an ￡11m move to Spanish giants Barcelona from Cruzeiro.
Was at the Copa America in 2001.
Ronaldinho
Position : Forward
Date of birth : 21 March, 1980
Team : Paris St-Germain (France)
Nationality : Brazil
Notes : World U/17 Championship winner in 1997. In the same year made his debut
for Gremio. Played in 1999 World Youth Cup. Scored a brilliant goal in his Copa
America international debut helping them to go on and win the tournament after
only being called up when Edilson was dropped. Helped Brazil reach the final
which they lost to Mexico but finished as top scorer in the Confederations Cup
in 1999. Helped Brazil qualify for the 2000 Olympics where he was part of the
team that was surprisingly knocked out in the quarter-finals. Will probably
make a European move at the end of the season. Moved to Paris St-Germain in
2001 but his debut was delayed over a dispute eventually settled by FIFA over
what PSG owed Gremio for the transfer, although he was out of contract when he
made the move. Scored two goals and was named in the All-Star Team as Brazil
won the 2002 World Cup.
Adriano
Position : Forward
Date of birth : 17 February, 1982

Nationality : Brazil
Notes : Made his international debut late in 2000, in Emerson Leao's first
match in charge of the national team, a World Cup qualifier against Colombia.
He is good in the air and left-footed. This was after a good 2000 season with
seven goals in the league and one in the Mercosur Cup where Flamengo were
knocked out by River Plate in the quarter-finals. He won the World U/17
Championships with Brazil in 1999. There were rumours of a move to Inter early
in 2001 but this did not occur. At the South American U/20 Championships he
helped Brazil to qualification for the World Youth Cup later on in 2001
becoming equal top goalscorer with teammate Ewerthon with six goals.
Scored six goals again in the World Youth Cup but Brazil could only make the
quarter-finals where they lost to Ghana. Made a move to Inter in the middle of
2001 as part of a three way deal where Vampeta moved to Flamengo and Reinaldo
moved to Paris St-Germain. Went on loan to Fiorentina in January 2002. Parma
bought him from Inter for the 2002/03 season.
Roque Santa Cruz

Date of birth : 16 August, 1981

Nationality : Paraguay
Notes : Played at World Youth Cup in 1999 scoring three goals. Soon after moved
from Olimpia in Paraguay to Bayern Munich in a big money move. Involved with
Paraguay at Copa America 1999. Was named Paraguayan player of the year for 1999
in a poll conducted by national newspaper ABC Color. One of the top young
strikers in the world. Scored a goal at the World Cup in 2002.
Milan Baros
Position: Forward
Date of birth : 28 October, 1981
Team : Liverpool (England)
Nationality : Czech Republic
Notes: Has represented Czech Republic in most youth levels including at the
European U/21 Championship, where he scored one goal and they finished
runner-up to Italy, and the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Also scored two goals in 2000
European U/18 Championship where they finished fourth. Scored four goals for
Banik Ostrava in 2000/01 as they narrowly avoided relegation. After nine goals
in fourteen games he made his full international debut against Belgium in
April 2001. He scored in this game and also in his second international match
which was a World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland. Made a ￡3.2m move to
Liverpool from Banik Ostrava but continued to play in the Czech Republic until
he gained a work permit. Joins international teammates Patrick Berger and
Vladimir Smicer at Liverpool.
Tomas Rosicky
Position : Midfielder
Date of birth : 4 October, 1980
Team : Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
Nationality : Czech Republic
Notes : Czech Republic full international who made his debut on 13/2/00 against
the Republic of Ireland. Helped Sparta Prague progress through the first group
stage in the 1999/00 European Champion's League. Sparta Prague were knocked
out in the second group stage. In Euro 2000 squad. Was named 2000 Czech
Republic league Player of the Year. Moved to Borussia Dortmund for ￡8m at
start of 2001.
Sebastian Deisler
Position: Midfielder
Date of birth : 5 Janaury, 1980
Team : Bayern Munich (Germany)
Nationality : Germany
Notes : Starred at 1998 U/18 European Championship for Germany. In Bundesliga
was given extended run in Borussia Monchengladbach's team in the year they
were relegated in 1998/99. He impressed enough that Hertha Berlin bought him
and he was involved in their 1999/00 European Champion's League campaign.
Has been capped by Germany. In Euro 2000 squad. Decided to join Bayern Munich
upon the end of his contract with Hertha Berlin in the middle of 2001. A knee
injury suffered in a pre-World Cup 2002 friendly kept him out for six months
including the World Cup.
Christoph Metzelder
Position : Defender
Date of birth : 5 November, 1980
Team : Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
Nationality : Germany
Notes : Moved in off-season in 2000 to Borussia Dortmund from third division
side Preussen Muenster. Tall, fast defender who has established himself in the
Dortmund first team. German U/21 international. Had a rapid rise to become a
full international and a key player in the German side which reached the final
of the 2002 World Cup where it lost to Brazil.
Steven Gerrard
Position : Midfielder
Date of birth : 30 May, 1980

Notes: Made Liverpool debut Vs Blackburn Rovers on 29/11/98. Captained England
U/18 and scored on debut for England U/21 against Luxembourg on 3/9/99.
Graduated from club reserves to international prospect in brilliant 1999/00
season after getting his chance in the Liverpool side because of injuries.
He was called up for England in February 2000 friendly Vs Argentina but was
forced to withdraw through injury. In Euro 2000 squad. Has since when health
become an important player for the English national team.
Alan Smith
Position : Forward
Date of birth : 28 October, 1980
Team : Leeds United (England)
Nationality : England
Notes: Product of National Centre of Excellence in Lilleshall and has
represented England at U/16, U/18 and U/21 levels. Joined Leeds as trainee
progressing through to the first team. Was given his chance and made
sensational debut to score with his first tough against Liverpool on 14/11/98.
David O'Leary gave him an extended run in the first team as a reward becoming
an important member of the team. Was named Carling Player of the Month for
August 2000. Eventually made his English debut after a good 2000/01 season
where he helped Leeds to the semi-finals of the European Champion's League.
Owen Hargreaves
Position : Midfielder
Date of birth : 20 January, 1981
Team : Bayern Munich (Germany)
Nationality : England
Notes : Born in Canada and with FC Foothill Calgary won Canadian U/15
Championship. Joined Bayern Munich mid 1997 and is now on verge of first team
place. Was wanted to be capped by Wales, England and Canada in youth teams but
eventually decided on England. A very good midfield talent. Was named the most
promising youngster by Germany's football professionals for 2001. Was at the
2002 World Cup.
Paolo Cannavaro
Position : Defender
Date of birth : 26 June, 1981
Team : Parma (Italy)
Nationality : Italy
Notes : Younger brother of current Italian international Fabio, who followed
in his brother's footsteps when he made the switch from Napoli to Parma. It is
thought that he may be an even better player than his brother which makes him
a very good prospect. Went on a year loan to Verona for the 2001/02 season
where his good form led to an Italian U/21 call-up.
Antonio Cassano
Position : Forward
Date of birth : 12 July, 1982
Team : Bari (Italy)-->AS ROMA
Nationality : Italy
Notes: Talented striker who is interesting all the big Italian clubs after
scoring several goals fro Bari in the 1999/00 season at the age of 17
including a winner against Inter Milan on his first start. Has impressed with
his creativity and playmaking skill since. After being a target for Juventus,
Milan and Manchester United, he eventually decided to join Roma prior to the
2001/02 season, becoming the most expensive teenager ever in a ￡20m deal.
