A veteran Argentinian striker who signed for Feyenoord on a two-year contract
in the summer of 2002, Mariano Bombarda scored 97 goals in 227 appearances for
FC Groningen and Willem II in the Eredivisie and FC Metz in Le Championnat.
With the departures of Johan Elmander (on loan) and Jon Dahl Tomasson following
the club's UEFA Cup win, Bombarda moved to Rotterdam to provide cover in
attack.
It was a surprise switch considering he had quit the Dutch league three months
before to go and live in Spain in the hope of finding a club.
"We have been monitoring Bombarda for some months," Feyenoord coach Bert van
Marwijk said after the transfer was done. "He can replace Pierre van Hooijdonk
when needed, but is also useful when we need someone in the box who can play
with his back towards the goal." In contrast to the totemic Van Hooijdonk,
however, Bombarda is particularly adept with the ball at his feet in the
penalty area.
