Ariel Ortega has long been one of Argentina's main offensive weapons. As
Argentina have competed at the highest level with the top national teams in the
world over the past several years, Ortega has been there.
Ortega got his start in professional football with Argentine giants River Plate
. In his first match in December of 1991, Ortega set up the game-winning goal
against Platense, and ""El Burrito"" has continued to impress ever since.
By 1993, he was a regular for the Buenos Aires powers. Thanks to Ortega's
playmaking contributions, River Plate captured the Apertura titles in 1993 and
1994. Ortega went on to lead River Plate to a South American double two years
later, as River captured both the Copa Libertadores and Apertura titles in 1996
.
His play earned him a trip to Europe, where Ortega joined Valencia in 1997,
scoring seven goals in his first season with El Che. A year later, Ortega moved
to Italian side Sampdoria, scoring eight goals in his only season there.
Even though he could not keep Sampdoria in the Serie A, he managed to stay up
by taking his playmaking skills to Parma, though he scored just six goals in
his two seasons there. After the 2000 season, Ortega returned to where it all
began and re-joined River Plate, where he is once again regarded as one of the
best players on the continent.
With his national team, Ortega has found his niche in a line-up loaded with
stars. Lining up next to Juan Sebastian Veron and Diego Simeone, Ortega is the
team's unstoppable motor. He is constantly a threat to score or to set up his
talented teammates. He may not have the muscle and steel of his fellow
midfielders, but he more than makes up for it with flair and heart.
Ortega earned his first cap in 1993 in a friendly against Germany, and his
first start came against Romania in Argentina's ill-fated 1994 FIFA World Cup
USATM campaign.
Four years later, though, Ortega stood out until the very end. He hit a double
against Jamaica as Argentina secured their passage to the second round with a
5-0 rout. Ortega played all 120 minutes in Argentina's classic second-round
victory against England. Against the Netherlands in the quarter-final, however,
he had a forgettable match, near the end of which he was sent off for
head-butting Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar. The Netherlands went on to win,
2-1.
Although he is the only regular starter on the team that plays his club ball in
Argentina, Ortega's past performances at the international level force opposing
defences to give him the same kind of respect they give more famous European-
based stars.
Ortega's consistency and flair will surely be an asset to the Albicelestes in
East Asia.
