Ortega pays heavy price Argentinian international Ariel Ortega has been banned until the end of the year and fined €9.5m, the largest ever amount on a single player, by FIFA after he walked out on his former club Fenerbahce SK. Ortega was under contract with the Turkish club until 2006, but abandoned them on the 12th February, missing the second half of the Turkish season. Fenerbahce reported him to FIFA, and yesterday the world governing body ruled that he must serve a suspension, and pay compensation to his former employers. FIFA released a statement saying that the 29-year old is "not eligible to play for any club until 30 December 2003." However, the ban does not extend to international football. Ortega was the jewel in Fenerbahce's crown, signing last summer from CA River Plate in a deal worth €8m. Ortega played just 17 matches for the club, scoring 5 goals. He now faces 6 months of inactivity. Ortega himself said that he left Fenerbahce after disagreements with some of his team-mates. They were his fourth European club, following short stints with Valencia, Sampdoria, and Parma. Ortega has also played in the last 3 World Cups with Argentina, taking over the playmaking duties in USA'94 when Diego Maradona was found guilty of drug use http://www.eurosport.co.uk/home/pages/V3/L2/S22/ sport_Lng2_Spo22_Sto449951.shtml -- L'homme qui s'est mal -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 203.68.107.69
