A wicked shot, deft ball manoeuvring, stifling defence, and a strong physical
presence have been the secrets to his success with some of the top clubs in
South America and Europe.
Veron began his professional career with Argentinian side Estudiantes, the same
club his father played for in the 1960s. From Estudiantes, Veron joined Boca
Juniors, where he enjoyed great success and gained the attention of both
national team coaches and European club skippers alike.
""Brujita"" left Argentina to test the waters of European football at the
tender age of 21 and has blossomed into one of the top players in the world.
Veron kicked off his European career with Italian club Sampdoria, where he
scored seven goals in his two seasons with the club. That same year, Veron
earned his first cap for Argentina in a match against Poland.
After his stay with Sampdoria, Veron began to stock his trophy case. He joined
Parma in 1999 where he made an immediate impact in his one and only season with
the club. Parma lifted both the UEFA Cup title and the Italian Supercup that
year. From Parma, Veron moved to Roman power Lazio for ￡20 million. In two
seasons with Lazio, Veron helped the club capture four trophies. He powered
them to the 1999 European Supercup and European Cup Winner's Cup, and then in
2000, Veron led Lazio to a rare Italian double, winning both the Serie A title
and the Italian Supercup.
Veron was on top of Serie A when his historic transfer to Manchester United was
completed. Veron moved to ply his trade at Old Trafford for a ￡28.1 million
price tag, making him the most expensive player in England at the time.
