Christian Gimenez signed for FC Basel from FC Lugano at the start of the
2001/02 season and the Argentinian-born striker immediately felt at home at
the Saint Jakob stadium. He scored 26 goals in 31 games that season to lead
the league in scoring and propel his new club to the Swiss title and towards
a place in the UEFA Champions League.
In the qualifying stages for that competition in August 2002, Gimenez was again
on song for Basel, scoring twice in the second leg of the second qualifying
round against Slovakian champions M?K Zilina, then in each leg against
Scottish champions Celtic FC.
A tireless worker and rugged battler, Giminez gives everything in every match.
The consummate team player, he may not score spectacular goals, but there is no
more deadly finisher in the Swiss first division.
