Now, I have the utmost respect for Arsene, and generally like to believe that he "knows" as we like to say in these parts. But we needed strengthening, and all he has done is sign a goalkeeper on loan. Chelsea must be shitting themselves. If Arsene can't find the players we need, what does that mean? Are they not available? Or are they available and can he not find them? Or, even more worryingly, does he not think we needed reinforcing? He's taken a f****g huge gamble with my club this year, it better pay off. Jenas to Spurs? I think Arsene could've made a better player of him. If he wanted to. But I was speaking to Bob Wilson today, yes I was, more of that in a second... and Bob confirmed what many already knew, and some knew but didn't want to believe. Namely Arsene doesn't like english footballers, doesn't think they're dedicated enough. So maybe that explains the lack of movement on Jenas and the backtracking on Carrick (who would've been a useful addition even with Vieira's u-turn last year). So why was I talking to Bob Wilson? That got your attention I bet, chaps? Well, the missus paid for me to go on a legends tour of Highbury for my birthday. The tour was today, so I rolled up at Arsenal tube around 11:35 in the A M to find that she was late. For once. As I waited in the sweltering heat, I utilized my phone's video camera for a little bit of an intro to the day. What kind of person AM I becoming? Anyway, she turned up a little late. Problems on the Victoria line, apparently. I think she just got lost at Finsbury Park tube as I had got through 5-10 minutes earlier with no sweat. Well that's not quite true, but anyway... We got to the main entrance and the Marble Halls unsure of who to speak to, but someone stuck their head out of the door and asked if they could help. We explained why we were there and were ushered in and presented with visitors' passes- Jo has managed to hang onto hers! And a gift bag; containing a Highbury pendant and key ring, a photo of Bob Wilson for signing purposes, a letter from Arsene, fixture card and a team photo from last season! In addition to the Arsenal magazine from November 2004. We were there then taken upstairs to Arsenal's cocktail lounge (the firast of its' kind in the country, fact fans) and served tea. Or in our case, orange juice and water. After much milling around and trying not to act too touristy in a room filled with people being just that, not to mention kids who I felt shouldn't really have been there (another story, another day maybe), we were told that Bob had broken down en route. And so the FA Cup and our little trophy in recognition of the Unbeaten run were wheeled out for photographic purposes. As I remarked to Jo, loads of people up before me looked like they were at a funeral rather than standing behind the most famous trophy in football. The World Cup excepted. But on getting a photo with it myself, I felt very self conscious, like "OH. MY.GOD. It's the FA Cup. And loads of people are looking at me". So I looked like I was at a funeral too. So, we then headed out into the sun to enjoy the views from the directors' box, Arsenal MD Keith Edelman's seats were the row behind me and Jo, and it was all in the details. The bannister covering the the entrance/exit, the little ashtrays attached to the back of each seat, and the flooring which looked distinctly marbleesque in the entrance. But I only noticed that on the way out, and Bob had turned up by then, so I'm getting ahead of myself. On entering the box, two of the guys on ythe tour shook hands with a familiar face. Familiar but couldn't place him. When Bob finally turned up, the mystery was unravelled, it was Peter Simpson, who was part of the 71 Double side! So, Bob talked about Arsenal, about his time with us, and about the new stadium, which you can catch a glimpse of from the East Stand. As ever with Bob, he came across very knowledgable and very warm. And Arsenal mad. He then took us down into the Marble Halls, before proceeding into the dressing room. I'd heard it was smaller than expected, and it is. But the big huge bath the players used to use was of great interest. It's disused now due to hygiene reasons. But the baths and showers the players use these days are nothing special. I'd like to think Arsene will have that resolved at Ashburton. It was here that Bob talked about the bottle of brandy the players used to slug from before games, with Peter sneaking of for a crafty fag (in the old days, not now). It was also here that Bob talked about Arsene's distrust of the english footballer and how it saddened him that Stuart Taylor was allowed to leave, though Bob basically set the deal up. So after we'd had a look at all the shirts hung up, from Lehmann to Pires, and then the subs bench- yes we have one in our changing room- we headed out to the tunnel. As we lined up there, I went right instinctively, Jo went left. Bob talked about how we always lined up on the right, and also got a bannister whilst the opposition didn't. He talked about how players just used to run out in the old days rather than coming out together now, as is the norm. And then out into what was almost blinding sunlight after the darkness and into the dugout areas. Again, Jo went left and I went right. More chat from Bob, whilst a guy on the tour seemed determined to turn it into the "me and Bob" show. The sprinklers came on and at this point, or it might've been before Bob revealed a fact he'd only discovered last month: There's a two foot slope running down from the Clock End goal to the North Bank and the pitch is also slanted, can't remember which direction, by a few feet! The final stop on the tour was the museum, and Bob stayed and signed things for about half an hour here, so I got my Bob Wilson autobiography signed, as well as the photo. Jo got her members book signed next to a quote from Bob. Bob and I talked briefly about his book, which he said he handwrote! I told him it was the best book about Arsenal I'd ever read, which it is. He replied "It gets a little sad in places, doesn't it?" and I told him that I cried and that I'd been sorry to read about that. "That" being the death of his daughter, Anna from a particularly agressive strain of cancer. On that note, I thanked him and Jo and I went off to explore the memorabilia accumulated over the years, before I got choked once more, reading tributes to David Rocastle, by David Dein and Michael Thomas. Some good stuff in that museum, though. I talked to Peter, who confessed he was bored with football now, he preferred playing to watching. As anyone with skill would, I guess! He likes golf though. Belatedly, I got a photo taken with Peter and Bob. Who looked far happier than I did! And then Bob left, leaving us with a 25 minute whizz through the history of Arsenal in a little screening room. That came to an end, and we were on our way. At 3pm. A great afternoon. http://tinyurl.com/cwwew
