Exclusive: Vieira - the final interview [15 July 2005]
Patrick Vieira left Arsenal yesterday. After saying his goodbyes at the
training ground, he departed to join up with his new team-mates at
Juventus. He gave his last interview as an Arsenal player to the Club's
official website. Speaking to Richard Clarke, here's what he said.
Arsenal.com: Patrick, how hard was it to leave Highbury?
PV: Yes it was a difficult decision. When you spend nine years at the
Club, like I did, it is a difficult decision to leave. But in the end
you have to make a choice for your future. It was a very difficult
decision, but I am happy with it.
PV：這是個很困難的決定，尤其是當你像我一樣在球隊待了九年之後。但到頭來你
必須為自己的未來作出決定，這真的很困難，但我很高興。
Arsenal.com: Why did you make that decision?
PV: I made the decision to leave because I felt it was time for me to
have a new challenge. But that does not mean I was unhappy or that I was
having a problem at Arsenal. It was just that I had the feeling I needed
to grow and meet a new challenge, and I feel Juventus was the best
challenge for me.
PV：我做出這決定是因為我覺得對我來說，是時候迎接新的挑戰了。但這並不表示
我在這裡不快樂或者有什麼問題，只是因為我認為我需要繼續成長，而 Juventus
對我而言是最佳的挑戰。
I can go with my head held high. I did my best every day in training and
in every match, and I left shaking the hand of Arsene Wenger and Mr Dein.
That was really important to me. Every side accepted the deal — the Club,
the Manager and myself. I arrived at the Club with a big smile and I left
the Club with a big smile.
我可以昂首闊步的離開，在每次訓練和每場比賽中我都全力以赴。而且我是在和
Arsene Wenger 和 Mr Dein 握手之後才離開的，這對我來說很重要，俱樂部、教練
和我都接受這項交易。我帶著笑容來到這裡，也帶著笑容離開。
Arsenal.com: Did you feel you’d gone as far as you could?
PV: That is a difficult question to answer because you never know what
will happen in the future. But when you think about it we won almost
everything with Arsenal. The only trophy that is missing is the Champions
League. And when you think that the year before last Porto won it, then
you think anyone can win it. I think we have been really unlucky in that
competition. But when I look back overall on my nine years at Arsenal, it
has been fantastic. It doesn’t matter what some people or some journalists
will say, I hope people remember I played more than 400 games for the Club.
PV：這是個很難回答的問題，因為你無法知道將來會發生什麼事。但是當你想到我
們幾乎在 Arsenal 贏到每一項榮譽，除了歐洲冠軍盃之外；當你想到去年奪冠的是

Arsenal.com: You’d had an unhappy time at Milan before you came to Arsenal,
did you feel you still wanted to prove something in Italy?
PV: No not at all. I have nothing to prove to anybody. I think I have
proved how good I am in the last nine years at Arsenal. When I went to
Milan I was 19, now I am 29-years-old. It is not the same. I am going now
after winning many trophies and I have a different stature after nine years
at Arsenal. Every aspect of my game has improved a lot. I have a strong
belief in myself I just want to show how good I am at a new club.
PV：不，完全不是，我不需要跟任何人證明什麼，我想在過去九年當中我已經證明
了我有多好。當我去 Milan 的時候是19歲，現在我29歲了，這完全不一樣。我是在
贏得眾多獎盃後才回去的，並且在比賽中各方面都進步良多，我內心有強烈的自信，
現在我只需要在新球隊表現出我有多好就可以了。
Arsenal.com: What was the highlight of your Arsenal career?
PV: The highlight? That would probably be when we first did the Double
in 1998. That is one of the best memories. But I hope I leave the Club
in the best way as well after the penalty in the FA Cup Final against
Manchester United. Scoring the final goal is good, it's the best way
to leave. But it is sad as well. You don’t forget what you did in nine
years in only one day. Arsenal will always be in my heart.
PV：高潮？應該是我們在1998年第一次贏得雙冠王吧，那是最好的回憶之一。我希
望我以最佳的方式離開球隊，而在足總盃決賽中射入最後的點球應該是最好的結局
，同時也是最令人傷感的結局。每一天我都不會忘記我在球隊九年中的美好時光。
Arsenal will always be in my heart.
The fans were always fantastic to me and when I went to the training
ground to say goodbye to everyone it was quite emotional. The medical
staff, the office people, the kitchen staff, the chef, I know them all
well and my relationship with them has been fantastic.
球迷對我總是非常棒。在我去訓練場向大家道別的時候真的很感傷，醫療人員、行
政人員、廚房工作人員、主廚，我和他們關係都很好，場面非常感人。
Arsenal.com: Off the pitch, is there any memory that sums up the Club as
a whole for you?
PV: It is just a special club. They create a very special atmosphere for
the players to work in. That is very important. Then of course there is
the passion of the fans. My relationship with them has been fantastic and
I am sure that will be really difficult to find again.
PV：這是個非常特別的俱樂部。到處都散發著特別的氣氛，還有球迷的熱情，我相
信一定很難在別的地方再找到這種感覺。
Arsenal.com: In what way has Arsenal progressed in your nine years?
PV: I think the Club has progressed every year. During my time at the Club,
we won the Championship and the FA Cup many times. I think when you look
at it, Arsenal has been the most stable Club in the last 10 years. That
shows how hard the Club has been working.
PV：球隊每年都在進步。在我的槍手生涯中，我們贏得四次足總盃與三次聯賽冠軍，
當你仔細檢視這些戰績，你會發現 Arsenal 是過去十年最穩定的俱樂部，這就顯示
了球隊上上下下的努力。
Arsenal.com: Do you have any final message for everybody associated with
the Club?
PV: I did just like to say thank you, thank you to everybody. The medical
staff who helped keep me fit, everyone in the offices and, of course, to
Arsene. He is the one who really knows me. He has been fantastic to me.
Ever since he joined the Club he has been behind me. When I had bad moments
he gave me 100 per cent support and confidence. That was important. I’d
also like to say thank you to Mr Dein who believed in me trusted me and
to the players who have just been fantastic.
PV：我只能說謝謝，謝謝你們所有人。幫助我健康上場的醫療人員、所有行政人員，
當然還有 Arsene，他是真正了解我的人，從他加入俱樂部那天起就一直支持著我。
當我有麻煩時他給我百分之百的支持與信心，這是最重要的。我還要向 Mr Dein 道
謝，他總是給予我充分的信任。
And of course, the fans. I‘d like to thank the Arsenal fans. They have
been fabulous. Even recently in the street they were saying ‘if you are
going, then thanks for the last nine years’. That is really touching and
it makes me feel that I gave my best for the Club.
當然還有球迷們，我要向所有槍迷致謝，他們一直都是最棒的。最近在街上遇到球
迷對我說‘if you are going, then thanks for the last nine years’。這非常
令我感動，這讓我覺得我把最好的一切都奉獻給了俱樂部。
