[新聞] Juventus close in on Vieira deal

Juventus expect to sign Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira on Thursday, according

to the Italian club's general director Luciano Moggi. Moggi said:

"We are on the verge of signing him. The deal should be completed this

afternoon." 

Juve are believed to be ready to pay up to ￡18m for the 29-year-old French

international midfielder. According to reports in the Italian media, he will be

offered a five-year contract worth ￡85,000 a week. Arsenal have refused to

comment, but Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport and the ANSA press agency

both claim a deal has been struck.


The Gunners did confirm Juve's approach for Vieira earlier this week.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood told the Daily Star newspaper: "I gather

Juventus have made enquiries but we're very undecided whether we are going to

talk to them or not.


"Patrick's aware they've approached us. It all very much depends on what they

offer and what he wants to do." 

What is important, if Vieira does go, is that Arsene sends out the right

message by signing at least 2 players that can boost the sqaud and the fans


Juve administrator Antonio Giraudo said: "There's no doubt we are interested,

even if it's going to be very difficult to take him away from Arsenal.

"He has great quality, as a player and as a man."

Vieira's current deal at Highbury ends in 2007. He was the subject of a large

bid from Real Madrid last summer and the Spaniards could join Juve in the

chase. Real midfielder Zinedine Zidane has led the calls for Vieira to make a

move to the Bernabeu.


"It would be good for Patrick to have a big move. He is still at an age where

he is at the top of his game," he said. Vieira is reported to have demanded

talks with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to hammer out his future.


"In a situation like this, you have to listen to what they say and tell the

player about it," added Hill-Wood.


"It would be very, very difficult to replace Patrick. We have a board meeting

in about a week's time and I am sure we will discuss it then.


"We have not decided what we want to do, but my gut feeling is we would very

much like him to stay."
