New boy Eboue fulfils his ambition

Emmanuel Eboue thought his chance of joining Arsenal had gone after
his trial with the Club in the summer came to an end.
The 20-year-old defender played in the pre-season training camp in
Austria and during the Amsterdam Tournament. But when the season
began, he was back at Belgian side Beveren. However Arsene Wenger
had noted the qualities of the Ivory Coast international and
completed a deal to bring him to Highbury last week. The manager
then showed the utmost faith in Eboue by throwing him in straight
away against Stoke in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. It fulfilled
a long-held dream for the right back.
“I really did not know if I was going to Arsenal or not after the
tournament in the summer,” he said. “I did not hear anything for two
months. But then one of the coaches at Beveren said that something
was going to happen and after that Arsene Wenger called me.
“From a very young age I had the ambition to play in England. And I
feel it is extraordinary to make my debut so quickly after joining,
in a competition like the FA Cup as well.”
Eboue is another product of the Asec academy in the Ivory Coast. A
certain Kolo Toure is also among its alumni. Their paths did not
really cross at Asec, the centre back is a few years older than the
right back, but like Toure, the mature Eboue feels his move to
Arsenal could help his country’s footballing development.
“It is a very good chance for me to improve and use that improvement
for the Ivory Coast national team,” he said. “Great things are
expected of us and I hope that playing in England can cement my place
in team. Looking at us right now I feel we have a great chance of
qualifying for the next World Cup.”
With Toure and Eboue making up half of their defence they might just
get there.
