Watching Arsenal centre-back Philippe Senderos successfully marshalling
Switzerland’s defence against the likes of France, Republic of Ireland and
Turkey last autumn, it seemed almost impossible to believe that here was a
young player less than nine months into his senior international career.
The young defender has already achieved a lot in a short space of time,
however, most notably when he captained Switzerland’s U-15 side at the age
of 13 and then went on to skipper his national side all the way to the 2002
UEFA European U-17 Championship title in Denmark – bringing the Swiss their
first international football success at any level.
Born in Geneva to a Serbian mother and Spanish father, the multilingual
Senderos is perhaps the most outstanding member of the young, multicultural
group of players that have rekindled a sense of hope and ambition in Swiss
football.
He started out as a five-year-old with Servette’s schoolboy teams and
progressed steadily through the ranks to make his debut in the Swiss top
flight at the age of 16. It was little wonder that during the European
Championship in 2002, scouts from all of the continent’s big clubs were
furiously taking notes.
He signed for Arsenal in June 2003 but had to endure a frustrating start to
his career in the English Premiership when a string of injuries kept him out
of action for almost an entire year. But when team-mate Sol Campbell fell
injured at the start of 2005, coach Arsene Wenger called on Senderos to fill
in. The young Swiss showed incredible maturity and held onto his place in the
heart of the Arsenal defence even when Campbell returned to fitness.
Senderos’s first chance for the Switzerland senior team came in similar
circumstances. Centre-back Murat Yakin got injured shortly before the FIFA
World Cup^(TM) qualifier away to France on 26 March 2005. Thrown in at the
deep end, Senderos once again proved a revelation, comfortably containing
David Trezeguet as the Swiss held the French to a vital goalless draw.
Having led his country to that first football honour with the U-17s, Senderos
certainly has the hunger and belief to inspire his team-mates to further
success on an even bigger stage.
