Wenger defends Lehman
By Steve Stammers, Evening Standard
24 September 2004
As if the battering Jens Lehmann had taken at the hands of Bolton
at Highbury last Saturday was not enough, he was subjected to another
bombardment from three internationals a few hours later.
The Arsenal keeper was pummelled by a series of aerial challenges at
Highbury during the 2-2 draw with Bolton and was at fault for the
first goal. Then Gary Lineker, Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen laid
into him on Match Of The Day, even questioning his long-term future
at Highbury.
There is, however, nothing but unwavering support from Arsene Wenger
for his £1million signing from Borussia Dortmund.
"I don't mind criticism, you have to accept it," said the Arsenal
manager. "The only answer Lehmann can give is what he has achieved
with us. He has, for instance, never lost a Premiership game and many
keepers would go for that. I concede it wasn't one of his best days
against Bolton but that was true for the whole team. The week before,
though, he did well at Fulham.
"I believe Lehmann is strong enough to live with the criticism. I
don't have a problem with fair criticism but it is unfair to single
Jens out for that goal because I don't think he was the only one who
did not do well. The guy [Radhi Jaidi] was completely unmarked and
that was not Jens's fault.
"The goalkeeper gets more pressure and more criticism when he lets
a goal in. You have seen that recently with England. But I want to
make it clear I have 100 per cent faith in Jens Lehmann."
Wenger has secured the long-term future of 19-year-old Gael Clichy.
The French defender has signed a new four-year contract after making
a huge impression during his first full season.
England Under-21 midfielder Jermaine Pennant is on course to secure
a new deal after his return to Arsenal following a season's loan at
Leeds. His contract runs out at the end of this season.
"It is a big season for Jermaine and I must say I can only hold my
hands up," said Wenger of the 21-year-old, whose off-field problems
have given him the reputation as a difficult individual to handle.
But Wenger said: "He is behaving tremendously well. He is a really
reformed character. He has never let me down."
Wenger has yet to decide if Sol Campbell is to return against
Manchester City tomorrow following a reserve-team outing on Monday.
The England defender has not played this season after picking up a
leg injury on England duty this summer.
