Arsenal challenge inspires Hleb

After a year-long courtship Arsenal FC recently completed the signing of
VfB Stuttgart's Aliaksandr Hleb. After five years in the Bundesliga, the
playmaker is now relishing the chance to test his talents in "the strongest
league in the world" and boost Arsenal's UEFA Champions League prospects.

Seamless transition
Just two minutes into his first match with Arsenal, a pre-season friendly
against Barnet FC, he scored his first goal for the club and after a month
in London, he is also finding his feet away from the pitch. Having moved
into the apartment vacated by the departing Edu, he is being put through a
crash course in English, and the signs are that he will slot equally
seamlessly into the Arsenal midfield.

Top five
"Arsenal are one of the top five clubs in the world," the 24-year-old Belarus
international told uefa.com. "The facilities are fantastic. The team is full
of world-class stars. And, they play in a league I rate as the strongest in
the world."

Moving up
During his five years with Stuttgart, under Felix Magath and latterly Mattias
Sammer, the Belarussian went from teenage unknown to one of the Bundesliga's
undisputed stars. But now he believes he has moved up a level, saying: "At
Stuttgart I played in the Champions League and finished second in the
Bundesliga [in 2002/03]. But last season was one of transition. I felt I needed
to move to grow as a player."

Easy decision
Despite long-term interest from Arsenal, Hleb's future was not decided until
June, and various other top European clubs were said to be interested,
including Real Madrid CF and Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea FC. However,
he insists there was only ever one club in it. "I made up my mind a long time
ago that this was the next club for me if I had the choice," he said. "I think
 I have come to the right club at the right time."

Stylistic match
Hleb believes that his new club combine the best of the European and English
football worlds. "Arsenal don't actually play a typically English style of
football," he said. "Hardly any of their goals come from headers because they
keep it on the ground so much. It's my kind of football. I like attacking,
entertaining football."

Flexible approach
During Arsenal's pre-season games, Hleb has slotted in on the left side of
midfield, with Robert Pires moving into the centre. The versatile Belarussian
says he is equally happy anywhere across the middle. He said: "During my time
at Stuttgart I played in virtually every position - right and left wing, centre
of midfield. So I'll be happy to play wherever I can be useful for the team,
and wherever the manager sees a role for me. Modern football requires players
at the top level to be flexible."

Lucky 13
At Stuttgart, Hleb eventually inherited the No10 shirt, and playmaker's mantle,
 of Bulgarian Krassimir Balakov, with whom he had formed a devastating
understanding. At Arsenal, he has plumped deliberately for the No13. And the
Premiership side will hope that it will bring them luck in Europe.

Winning ambitions
"I know Arsenal are determined to succeed in the Champions League," he said.
"Hopefully I can help them win. I'm still young and I've still got plenty to
learn. I think under Arsene Wenger there will be plenty of opportunity for that
. If you really want something enough and you are prepared to work for it
enough, then I think you can achieve it."

兵工廠的挑戰激勵赫萊布

經過長達一年的努力，兵工廠最近終於和斯圖加特的赫萊布（Aliaksandr Hleb）完成簽約
。在德甲度過5個年頭，這名主力球員現在有機會在「世上最強的聯賽」中展露自己的才華
，並且提高兵工廠在歐洲冠軍聯賽的期望。

迅速融入

兵工廠季前熱身賽對巴尼特（Barnet FC），是赫萊布來到倫敦一個月後的首場比賽，他僅
僅上場2分鐘就攻進第一球。在球場外他也找到了落腳處，搬進了剛離開的艾杜（Edu）原
先住的公寓。他下定決心要學好英文，這種種跡象都表示，他將會迅速融入兵工廠的中場
陣容裡。

前五球隊

「兵工廠是世界上五個頂級俱樂部之一，」24歲的白俄羅斯國腳對歐洲足聯官網說：「設
備一流，球隊裡都是世界級球星，而且，他們參與的是我認為世上最強的聯賽。」

更高層次

在斯圖加特的5年，先後受教於馬加特（Felix Magath）和薩莫爾（Matthias Sammer），
這名白俄羅斯人從一名沒沒無聞的青年成長為德甲眾口稱譽的球星，但現在他相信自己來
到了更高的層次，他說：「我在斯圖加特踢過冠軍聯賽，也在（2002/03賽季）德甲拿到
第2名，但上賽季是一個轉捩點，作為一名球員，我覺得我需要轉隊繼續成長。」

早有決定

雖然兵工廠注意他很久，但赫萊布直到6月才決定他的未來。其他的歐洲豪門也對他表達過

指派我任何位置，我都很樂意。現代足球要求球員處於最高水平，同時能夠身兼數職。」

幸運十三

在斯圖加特，赫萊布最終繼承了曾傳授他厲害招數的保加利亞傳奇球星巴拉科夫（Krassim
ir Balakov）的10號球衣。來到兵工廠，他則選擇了13號球衣。這支英超球隊希望這會為
他們在歐洲賽場帶來好運。

勝利雄心

「我知道兵工廠下定決心要在冠軍聯賽取得成功，」他說：「希望我能夠幫他們獲勝。我
還年輕，還有很多東西要學。我認為在溫格（Arsene Wenger）帶領下有很多機會完成目標。
如果你真的想在某些方面獲得滿足，也準備好努力以赴達成目標，我想你就一定能夠成功
。」
