Matthew is a highly-regarded centre half with natural leadership qualities.
He is comfortable in possession, powerful in the air and strong in the
tackle.

After impressing at the back for the reserves, Matthew was named in the
first-team squad for Carling Cup ties against Sunderland and Reading last
season but he was an unused substitute in both matches.

Matthew was taken on the first team’s tour of Austria over the summer and
also started Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial at Emirates Stadium — the
first game ever to be played at the Gunners’ new home.
