Mart Poom admits his move to Arsenal came “out of the blue”.
The keeper completed a loan deal from Sunderland on deadline day and
will stay at Highbury until January 1. The move ends a difficult spell
for the experienced Estonian international; a long-term knee injury
has kept him sidelined since October 2004.
It meant he was desperate to play once more and could not believe his
good fortune when Arsene Wenger came calling.
“I only knew last week,” he told Arsenal.com. “It really came out of
the blue but it is a fantastic move for me considering I missed most of
last year with an injury and did not start this season as a No 1.
“My last game was in October last year so I feel this is a big chance
for me. It has been very frustrating, you just ask any player who is out
for a long time.”
Poom will compete with Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia for the No 1 jersey
at Highbury. He respects his new team-mates and is happy to bide his time.
“The competition is great in any Premiership club,” he said, “but
Arsenal are one of the major clubs in the world. Jens and Manuel are top
keepers so I’ll just do what I can when I am needed. Arsenal play many
games so they need a big squad.”
